Christian doctor kidnapped in northern Iraq: police
Source: AFP

MOSUL, Iraq — An armed gang kidnapped a Christian doctor from her home near the northern Iraqi city of Mosul overnight as her four children looked on, police said on Sunday.

"The gang kidnapped the doctor, Mahasin Bashir, in her home late at night as her children watched, and then they put her into a car," a police officer said on condition of anonymity.

The officer said the abduction happened in the predominantly Christian town of Bartala, around 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Mosul in northern Iraq's Nineveh province, one of the country's most violent areas.

He added that the motives behind the kidnapping were not immediately clear.

3. And she's an accomplished, educated woman
And many of the folks who engage in terrorism despise that.

5. An awful crime, but muslim doctors and women have been kidnapped and killed by the
thousands. This sounds like an effort to gin up outrage among the fundamentalists in America.

7. No. Meaning that the media will seize upon ONE christian doctor being seized in Iraq
and ignore the thousands of others who have been kidnapped, tortured, and murdered who WERE NOT christians.

It's really not very complicated. Just show on teevee the things that fire up the right-wing christians against the muslims.

I have no idea WHO did it.

8. Christians are specifically targeted in that area
This is a known FACT. You leave the muslim faith and become a christian there you sign your own death warrant and that of your family.

11. Maybe you've forgotten your recent history, Dappleganger. Sunnis were targeted by
shia, shia were targeted by sunnis, Kurds were targeted by both. KIdnappings, torture, murders were rampant. Why should the christians be the only ones who weren't on the list?

Religious cleansing has been going on in Iraq since Paul Bremer dissolved the Iraqi Army. Now, one christian gets kidnapped and it's an international incident?

I wonder how anyone who calls him/herself an atheist is faring in those environs.

You haven't seen any news hasn't reports about the stories of abductions, ransoms and killing resulting from the Shia v. Sunni troubles?

Unusual-- as I've seen many of these stories.

I guess to fire up the fundie base, this particular story will gets lots and lots and lots of airtime... :eyes:
