Injured Stanford back in lockup after fight
Texas financier had a concussion, two black eyes, a broken nose

updated 35 minutes ago

CONROE, Texas - Texas financier R. Allen Stanford has been returned to a lockup after being hospitalized for treatment of a concussion following a jail fight.

Court-appointed attorney Kent Schaffer told The Associated Press on Monday that his client was injured in a fight on Thursday with another inmate at the Joe Corley Detention Facility in Conroe near Houston.

Schaffer says Stanford had "a concussion, two black eyes, a broken nose." Schaffer says Stanford was returned to the lockup Sunday afternoon.

Stanford is being held on charges of running a $7 billion Ponzi scheme. He has denied the allegations.

Stanford is charged with bilking investors of the now-defunct Stanford Financial Group. Schaffer says a status hearing is Oct. 14.

Stanford getting new lawyer: a public defender
By MARY FLOOD Copyright 2009 Houston Chronicle
Sept. 15, 2009, 11:20PM

Fallen billionaire R. Allen Stanford, his assets frozen and his company's insurance refusing to pay, was appointed an attorney from the federal public defender's office Tuesday.

Senior U.S. District Judge David Hittner asked Dick DeGuerin if he still wished to withdraw and he did, having not been paid for months of work and having been told by Stanford that he wanted lawyers from Washington, D.C., to take over.

The judge asked Stanford if he currently has any funds to pay a lawyer and Stanford said he didn't know.

“I'll take that as a no,” said Hittner, who ordered Marjorie Meyers, the head of the federal public defender's office in Houston, to take the case.

4. I admit that I kinda like the idea...
of a billionaire rip-off artist getting the shit kicked out of him, but I wonder why the prison didn't have him in some type of protective custody. Seems to me that a lot of people would want a piece of him.

8. A society of chicken-shits
American society has come a long way from the barbaric days when kings ordered miscreants to be beheaded. Now they collect up the sadistic and violent and, too timid to perform the actual punishment themselves, they drop the miscreant in the middle.

16. I think it is good that he has a taste of how ordinary people live
Because that is the standard for people that go to jail in the real world.
While he was one of the rich and famous he probably supported prisons being as miserable as possable....they deserved it....now so does he.

24. No, but it is poetic justice.
When one of the privileged, entitled, above the law, ruling class gets sent to a place they thought they would never wind up. In one of the hellholes they've been shipping us unwashed masses off to since the beginning of time.

25. Agreed...
When I read this article I'm reminded of the racism that fills our prisons with a high percentage of minorities, the innocents who are swept up by the prison industry, the people who are there for committing crimes that should not be crimes, our system of "justice" that favors the wealthy who can afford high-priced lawyers, and the brutal conditions that are allowed to exist behind those walls. It is a system that:

--is designed on the basis of "cruel and unusual punishment"
--brutalizes those who are there
--is run by a government that either condones torture or protects torturers
--is operated in a country that is moving with break-neck speed toward police-state fascism
--and could possibly, one-day, hold some of us for opposing our government

News of prison brutality is nothing to cheer about, yet this thread is full of people who are doing just that. So I echo your sentiment, miyazaki. Pathetic.

26. The responses on this thread are pathetic and disgusting.
1. Stanford has not been convicted of anything at this point.

2. The punishment of imprisonment is supposed to be the loss of freedom, not abuse by jailers or other prisoners.

Grow up, DUers, or one day you're going to wake up, look in the mirror, and see Free Republic.
