Dem congressman refuses to apologize for comment (GOP wants sick Americans to 'die quickly')
Source: AP

(AP) — WASHINGTON - A Democratic congressman from Florida is refusing to apologize for saying that Republicans want Americans to "die quickly" if they get sick.

Rep. Alan Grayson made his comments on the House floor Tuesday night while criticizing Republican health care proposals. The first-term Democrat is known for being provocative.

Republicans are likening Grayson's remark to Republican Rep. Joe Wilson's widely criticized shout of "You lie!" during President Barack Obama's address to Congress earlier this month. They say Democrats should insist that Grayson apologize just as they did Wilson.

Larson: Grayson should apologize for 'die quickly' remark

The chairman of the House Democratic Caucus is calling on one of his members to apologize for charging that Republicans want Americans who get sick to "die quickly."

Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) said on the floor Tuesday night that "If you get sick, America, the Republican healthcare plan is this: Die quickly." Republicans expressed outrage at the remark, comparing it to Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) shouting, "You lie!" at President Barack Obama during his address to Congress.

Democratic Caucus Chairman John Larson (Conn.) said Grayson's remark wasn't as serious as Wilson's outburst, but still said he should apologize. Wilson apologized privately to the White House, but was officially scolded by the House when he wouldn't apologize on the House floor.

"It's not the same magnitude, clearly, and didn't deal with decorum, as it did in the case of Joe Wilson, but I would encourage Alan to apologize," Larson told reporters. "And I would encourage members that, as we get into a very heated and emotional and visceral debate, that we keep in mind the rules of the House and the way we treat and respect one another."

Edited on Wed Sep-30-09 06:49 PM by AlbertCat
When are Repugs going to apologies for not letting Dems in the minority have a conference room? Or for keeping the vote open 3 hours longer than allowed by law to get members of their own party to reluctantly acquiesce and vote for something that clearly should have lost?

When are Repugs gonna apologies for calling us, and our reps, traitors and terrorists and murderers of fetuses?

Have they apologized for lying us into war....with the SOTU no less?

Hell...they haven't apologized for WaterGate and the S&L scandal yet!!!!

so I guess the fl congress man was partly right metaphorically speaking GOP wants the bill to "get sick" and "die quickly" just calling a spade a spade. Why are repubs always getting the pass. They have been accusing dems of "deathcare" all through this debate not once called out on any of their bullshit.

185. Grayson did take the high road. He spoke the truth without disrespecting the POTUS or
breaking any specific House Rule of Decorum, or interrupting anyone, or calling any individual a liar, etc. He pointed out the inevitable consequences of not effecting meaningful health care reform. Larson should have commended him instead of calling on him to apologize. It's Larson who is taking the low road.

interrupted the President while the President was addressing a joint session of Congress. Grayson interrupted no one.

Second, Wilson did not interrupt to debate a point or a bill, but only to insult the President personally. Grayson did not insult any individual personally. He spoke against the position that the Republican Party has been taking on health care reform.

Third, calling an individual a liar, as did Wilson, violated a specific House Rule. Grayson did not violate any House rule.

Fourth, Wilson lied when he called the President a liar. Grayson was telling the truth about the logical consequences of the Republican position.

Apples and oranges, false equivalency--whatever you want to call it--there is absolutely no comparison between Grayson's statement and Wilson's outburst.

This is much more like Republicans yapping about death panels, only facts don't back up that claim. Statistics tell us how many people die each and every day because they don't have health insurance and therefore back up the consequences of voting against and/or obstructing/slow walking health care reform.

People who are uninsured die. People with insurance die, when cost savings are more important than life-saving treatments.

It's called "death by spreadsheet"

It's common

It's a fact

No reason to apologize for it

Sure, taking the high ground is fine when you're facing an enemy that has at least some scruples. Its been driven home more than enough, that these bastards don't even know what scruples are. So, if we keep "taking the high ground" I'm sure it'll just get us more impeachments, more swiftboating, more bogus townhall protest, more forced resignations, etc, etc...

So, I say kudos to Congressman Grayson!!!

26. It's not about telling the truth
It's about fighting fire with fire. Emotions are much more powerful human motivators than reason. It's about time we remember that and get some emotionally charged soundbites out there to trump the right-wing propaganda that the Rovians do so well.

The GOP is on the wrong side of the truth on this, and the truth has a habit of floating to the top.

The more they talk about it, the more the truth will come out.

The congressman is right - they don't care about life.

37. "Sorry, I meant to say Republicans seem to think it acceptable that 18,000 Americans
every year die sooner due to a lack of health insurance."

or

Republicans don't seem to care that the closest thing we have to death panels today are the private insurance claims adjusters who earn bonuses based on claims denied.

or

Republicans seem more concerned about making things fair for the insurance companies that have treated our constituents very unfairly for decades now.

This is what Joe Wilson would say to a poor, ill, working-class American in a waiting room. Wilson and company are the liars, not Obama when he said that health care won't extend to non-citizens. And again they're opposed to Alan Grayson for daring to expose the right-wing view on health care.

Cowardly conservatism - that's what we've been seeing recently, from the noise about Dan Rather's story on Bush's National Guard service, to the health care town brawls, the Fox News conspiracy paranoia, you name it.

The GOPricks decided long ago to turn this into a street fight with no rules or regard for anyone other than themselves. It might not have been the polite way to word it, but I've had it with the Democrats always having to apologize for any and every small transgression while we have the Repukes saying anything that they want. "Death Panels" if we get health care reform is a hell of a lot worse than what Rep. Grayson said. I wish that some of his fellow (D) Reps. would show up with T-shirts echoing what he said just so that he'd know that they have his back.

59. No, I didn't
Of course, Republicans owe apologies I don't think we'll ever hear about the lies they've told. And Betsy McCaughey should be made to do public penance by wearing a Scarlet L in for the rest of her life, as should Rick Scott. Dick Armey, who helped send the right wing goon squads to Town Hall Meetings, should apologize -- just before he's sentenced for racketeering.

So, I'm not going to make a big thing about it. Nevertheless, Mr. Grayson didn't do any more than the above-named to contribute to a real discussion on health care. For that, he should apologize.

51. Alan Grayson is saying what we know to be true.
"The Republican plan -- don't get sick, and if you do get sick, die quickly." ---Rep. Alan Grayson, D-FL, September 29, 2009

Alan Grayson from Florida. A fighter. And he's a DEMOCRAT.

It's been far too long, too few and too far between.

Grayson, a freshman Democrat who represents Florida's 8th Congressional District -- which includes parts of Orange, Osceola, Lake and Marion counties -- made the comments Tuesday night on the House floor during debate on health care legislation. Republicans quickly pounced on the comment.

.....

Grayson was elected last November, defeating four-term Republican Congressman Ric Keller with 52 percent. President Barack Obama also carried the district -- which includes Orlando, Celebration, and the major theme parks in Central Florida -- by a similar margin.

.....

Grayson has been a strong supporter of President Obama's efforts to reform the nation's health care system. During a press conference in Winter Garden last month at the Children's and Family Health Centers, Grayson said "Health care reform should save money and it should save lives. If it meets those two goals, I'll vote for it."

Rep. Alan Grayson of Florida has refused to apologize for his remarks on the House floor Tuesday night in which he criticized Republican health care proposals as a “blank piece of paper.”

“If you get sick, America, the Republican health care plan is this: die quickly,” he said. “That’s right. The Republicans want you to die quickly if you get sick.”

His remarks weren’t spontaneous: He reinforced his point with signs saying the same thing.

.....

Rep. Tom Price of Georgia, who heads the conservative Republican Study Committee, drafted a “resolution of disapproval” that mirrors the one Democrats approved against Wilson, saying Grayson’s conduct was “a breach of decorum and degraded the integrity and proceedings of the House.”

Price said Wednesday afternoon that Republicans would withhold introducing it to give Grayson more time to apologize.

 :nopity: :eyes:

More on Grayson here.

Here is some of his work BEFORE he became a Congressman last year.

And when I heard Schumer ask Grassley yesterday what he thought about (the government program) Medicare, and Grassley's answer was that Medicare is part of the fabric of our society, I started thinking that the worm has finally turned. Republicans have HATED Medicare since its inception, and to hear Grassley now defending it is beyond the looking glass.

These dysfunctional guys are so totally ripped to shreds psychologically that they are now *rooting for Medicare*.

How is that for bizarre?

Keep it up, Alan Grayson. Help us finish them off, before they destroy our country.

57. recommended. I would have said "Republicans prefer to protect insurers profits and let 22,000
americans die a year due to lack of health insurance than vote for Health insurance reform."

But, still it's good to hear a Democrat finally realize we are in a state of war with the Republliocans and talk of bi-lateralism
(or more euphamistically: bipartisanship) is Republican propaganda.

It's the Republicans against the American public (or at least the average non-wealthy American) and it's time for the Democrats to wake up to this fact. The Republicans attitude is politics is war. Well, so be it. Then let's bring it to 'em Dems. Act like Democrats (and like democrats) and fight for America, fight for democracy in AMerica. Fight for what's right, damn it!

(you'll find it feels good).

89. Update: Grayson: 'I apologize to the dead' not the GOP
http://blogs.tampabay.com/buzz/2009/09/grayson-apologize-hell-no.html#more

Grayson: 'I apologize to the dead' not the GOP

U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson, under fire for his heated speech last night, took the House floor awhile ago and offered an apology, but not the one Republicans wanted to hear.

"Last night, I gave a speech and I'm not going to recount everything I said, but after that speech, several Republicans asked me to apologize. I would like to apologize.

"I would like to apologize, and here's why. According to this study, health insurance and mortality in adults which was published two weeks ago, 44,000 Americans die every year because they have no health insurance. 44,789 Americans die every year according to the Harvard study. And you can see it by going to our Web site at grayson.house.gov. That is 10 times more than the number of Americans who have died in Iraq and who died in 9/11. But that was just once. This is every single year. That's right. Every single year.

"Take a look at this. Read it and weep. And I mean that, read it and weep, because of all these Americans who are dying because they don't have health insurance. Now, I think we should do something about that, and the Democratic health care plan does do something about that. It makes health care affordable for those who can't afford insurance, and it saves these peoples' lives.

"Let's remember we should care about people even after they're born. I call upon the Democratic members of the House, I call upon the Republican members of the House, I call upon all of us to do our jobs for the sake of America, for the sake of those dying people and their families. I apologize to the dead and their families that we haven't voted sooner to end this holocaust in America. I yield the rest of my time."

If you have insurance, they want you to get at least two weeks of extremely expensive futile care that will make hospitals, drug companies and medical goods companies a lot of money.... then you get to die.

Wilson was reprimanded for shouting out a personal attack at the President.

I just unsubscribed from the DNC's Organizing for America mailing list in response to yet another fund raising email seeking to nickel and dime me to death before congressional Democrats grow a pair and join with Grayson. I was prompted for a my reason for wanting to unsubscribe, I wrote
"Because I am that disgusted with the way my party handed the baton of governance I worked so hard to present them with in the last election over to the Republicans. The most recent spectacle of the Senate Finance Committee hearings sealed the deal for me. Not another dime, not another vote, not another word until there's a reason to believe they're not being wasted on a party that can't stand up to the Republican Party and it's right wing scream machine. I rolled up my sleeves, it seems all my party did was put Senators in charge who are more interested in lining their pockets and pleasing Republicans than any type of meaningful health care reform with an iron clad public option."

184. I agree with the Orlando Sentinel: a pox on both their houses.
Grayson's bombast

"U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson, the first-term Democrat from Orlando, already has a well-deserved reputation for overheated rhetoric. But he outdid himself Tuesday night when he declared — on the floor of the House — that the "Republican plan" for health care was for Americans to not get sick, or to "die quickly" if they do.

There is no place in a congressional debate for this kind of hyperbolic, hyperpartisan attack. It's toxic. Mr. Grayson owes the House a sincere apology.

But is it any surprise that pugnacious Democrats like Mr. Grayson are fighting back in the escalating war of words of health-care reform? Some Republicans, after all, have been hurling their own over-the-top charges at Democrats for weeks, like accusing them of favoring "death panels" to deny care to the elderly and disabled. Republican Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite of Brooksville said on the House floor that the Democrats' health bill "essentially said to America's seniors: Drop dead."

A pox on both their houses..."

199. Congressman Grayson spoke the De Facto Truth.
The Republicans believe in profits over the people, that's why they support an industry; having nothing to do with health care, indeed an industry that leeches precious resources away from the endeavor of health care in the form of profits based in large part on real life death panels.

But even without the death panels, there is no logical reason for such an industry to exist as every "legitimate" dollar of profit they make comes at the expense of actual health care.

I salute Congressman Grayson for his courage and honesty.:patriot:

BTW, insurance is a huge part of Connecticut's economy.

"Modern Connecticut is also known for its wealth. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Connecticut had ready access to raw materials which helped to develop a strong manufacturing industry, and financial organizations flourished: first insurance companies in Hartford, then hedge funds in Fairfield county. This prosperity has helped give Connecticut the highest per capita income, Human Development Index, and median household income in the country.<10><11><12>" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connecticut

And, Larson, who lives in East Hartford, aka insurance heaven, "was also the co-owner of an insurance agency in East Hartford before entering public service." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_B._Larson

Insurance is among the top five industries that contribute to Larson, who raises more $$$ than the average bear.

209. Nothing to apologize for
Edited on Thu Oct-01-09 12:04 PM by Solly Mack
If you support and promote policies that deny people -

a living wage (with legal recourse)
decent affordable housing (with legal recourse)
a safe environment to work in (with legal recourse)
affordable & comprehensive health care (with legal recourse)

then you are effectively telling people to work themselves to death as quickly (and as quietly) as possible.

Getting sick can become a death sentence when people don't have health care. You can lose your job, your home. How little your country - your government - values you is very much on display for the world to see when improving the lives of Americans is legislated as not being cost effective. (because it could harm campaign contributions if it angers corporations)

Sure, they label it "socialism" to get the idiots all riled up....but what they are really saying is: Shut up! Get married! Give birth to future workers! Work until you die! And do all of this quietly! - just don't forget to wave the flag!

and the above list is just a few examples.

Joe Wilson was forced to apologize for INTERRUPTING THE PRESIDENT DURING A SPEECH, SOMETHING THAT HAD NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE.

Not for what he said.
