Nike leaves U.S. Chamber of Commerce over climate policy

Today Nike became the latest company to part ways with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's climate change policy.

"We fundamentally disagree with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on the issue of climate change and their recent action challenging the EPA is inconsistent with our view that climate change is an issue in need of urgent action," the company, which has its headquarters near Beaverton, said in a http://media.oregonlive.com/environment_impact/other/Nike%20US%20Chamber%20Statement1.pdf">statement.

The company said it would resign its position on the chamber's board but remain a member of the business group in order to advocate for a more aggressive climate change strategy internally. "Moving forward we will continue to evaluate our membership," the statement said.

The move follows pressure by some Nike shareholders for the company to leave the chamber, which recently challenged a new initiative by the Environmental Protection Agency to track emissions of heat-trapping gasses like carbon dioxide. Today Senators will reveal a new bill to limit the output of such gasses, which most scientists agree lead to global warming.

1. Surely an alternative (more rational) Chamber is required.

These represent U.S. business overseas, and often leave a bad impression at present.

2. Several big companies have quit the CofC lately over its climate change position.

Some others have made public statements of disagreement with the Chamber over climate policy and may drop out in the future. Many of the companies that have dropped out or expressed their dissatisfaction are now members of USCAP (United States Climate Action Partnership) http://www.us-cap.org/index.asp .

3. Its pretty bad when Nike leaves over climate change

And the US CoC didnt force them to leave their organization over child labor violations years ago.

6. Nike needs a healthy environment for it's workers...

It can't have a bunch of 8 year olds missing work. That's 16 hours of labor (each) a day they're missing out on.
