Armenia-Turkey agreement delayed
Source: bbc

A planned agreement normalising ties between Turkey and Armenia after a century of hostility has been delayed.

The deal was to be signed at 1500G in Switzerland, but an unnamed US official was quoted by AFP news agency as saying there had been a "last-minute hitch".

Armenia is reportedly objecting to a planed statement by Turkey.

1. Not surprising
Turkey's been imprisoning any of their journalists or even novelists to this day who dare to mention that there was massive genocide of ~1.5M Armenians in Turkey between 1915 & 1923, as well as numerous smaller massacres in previous years. The statement must include some BS denial.

2. Well said!

That's what came to my mind when i read that news article. Turkey must have come up with some BS statement that denied that this genocide ever happened. To deny this genocide is like denying the Holocaust ever happened.

And also lets not forget the fate of the Kurds under Turkish grip

8. How about the Turkish Genocide by Armenians?
Edited on Sat Oct-10-09 08:25 PM by gerenimox
How about the denial of genocide by Armenians against the Turks? Do you even know that the Armenians murdered hundreds of thousands of Turkish civilians in the ww1? I don`t remember the Jews killing any Germans in the WW2. Can I ask you what happened to the millions of Turks who had lived in the balkans before the ww1 if they were not genocided by the christians? But then again, who cares if some muslims were killed by christians. Christians can simply get away with their crimes just like they have got away with the genocides of Incas, Mayas, Azteks, Australian Aborigines, American Natives, Algerians, Azeris, Turks... and it`s still the same crappy Christian propaganda.

So, should Turkey recognize this genocide hoax, just because Armenians are christians? I`m asking again; how about the genocided muslims? Will Armenia ever recognize the Turkish and Azeri Genocides they carried out?

Turkish-Armenian signing delayed; Clinton mediates

ZURICH — U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton engaged in last-minute diplomacy on Saturday aimed at salvaging an accord to establish diplomatic relations between Turkey and Armenia after a century of enmity.

The agreement was supposed to be signed by the Turkish and Armenian foreign ministers at a reception in the Swiss city of Zurich, with Clinton among the world dignitaries in attendance. But a dispute over the statements the countries would make sparked a delay, and forced her to intervene.

"She's involved in working out an agreeable text," said a senior U.S. State Department official. "She's talking with the Armenian foreign minister, and she had a long talk with the Turkish foreign minister."

Clinton heads back to Turkey-Armenia deal venue 10 Oct 2009 16:47:01 GMT

ZURICH, Oct 10 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton headed back to the Zurich venue where the historic signing of a deal with Turkey to end a century of hostility was due to take place after negotiations hit a last minute snag.

Clinton had returned to her hotel to help smooth over disagreements with Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian over statements to be read at the ceremony which had been due to take place at 5 p.m (1500 GMT).

A U.S. official said a new version of the Turkish statement had been brought to the hotel. Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu waited at the venue along with other international dignataries.

The deal has faced fierce opposition from nationalists on both sides and a Armenian diaspora which insists Turkey acknowledge the killings of up to 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman forces in World War One as genocide.
