Campbell (Calif.) Council Expected To Elect Country's Youngest Openly Gay Mayor
Source: KTVU

Campbell Vice Mayor Evan Low is hoping to make history Tuesday night by becoming the country's youngest openly gay mayor.

If chosen as expected by his fellow council members tonight to fill the mayoral seat, Low, 26, will also be the country's youngest Asian American mayor, he said. He would replace current Mayor Jane Kennedy.

Low said that although he is proud of those milestones, his aim is to be representative of the entire Campbell community.

"I hope that this will provide an opportunity for other people to get involved who traditionally might not see politics as something that might be exciting or something that might not interest them," Low said.

... The City Council is expected to appoint Low mayor at a 7:30 p.m. meeting Tuesday night in Council Chambers. The position of mayor rotates annually in Campbell.

3. Most of our cities here are "weak" mayor systems with part time city councils
the mayorship rotates among the city council members. while the mayor does have more responsibility, i don't think in these small cities it is much more overwhelming than being a council member.

one of mayors here in South San Francisco was in his 20s when first elected, he worked at Safeway the rest of the time. he did a good job, i assume at both. :D

2. This town is adjacent to Cupertino, home of Apple
and both are safely within the Bay Area, where it would be bigger news if he smoked than if he's gay.
