Politics On The HudsonSame-Sex Marriage Vote Today In Senate
December
2
The state Senate is set to vote today on whether to legalize same-sex marriage in New York, and it remains unclear whether the controversial measure will pass.
Senate officials confirmed this morning that the long-awaited vote will take place after the Senate votes to adopt reductions to the state budget and takes up other legislation.
If approved, New York would be the sixth state to legalize same-sex marriage, joining Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts and Vermont. In New Hampshire, the law takes effect next year.
Supporters and opponents of the measure were expected to converge at the state Capitol today in a last bid to lobby lawmakers. Democrats hold a 32-30 seat majority in the Senate, but several Democrats have indicated they would vote against the legislation, which will therefore require several Republicans to vote in favor of it to pass.
