Judge won't end order targeting voter intimidation
Source: Associated Press

NEWARK, N.J. — A federal judge in New Jersey has declined a request by the Republican National Committee to dissolve a 27-year-old court order aimed at preventing intimidation of minority voters.

In his ruling Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Dickinson Debevoise said voter intimidation remains a threat and preventing it outweighs the potential danger of voter fraud.

But the judge did modify the order and set a 2017 date for its expiration.

The order resulted from a lawsuit filed in New Jersey in 1981, and applies nationwide. Democrats claimed a Republican "ballot security" program in minority neighborhoods violated the federal Voting Rights Act.

A big thank you to Judge Debevoise.

1. Good for him. There really should be NO expiration date on this,
since the threat never goes away.

2. I agree
It was an almost 80 page ruling and I'm hoping that buried someplace in all that there's a provision to extend it upon review. However, I've not seen anything suggesting such yet.

4. Rights are not granted.
They are asserted. Smug little repug thugs would certainly think twice about challenging voters at polls if those voters showed up with torches and pitch forks.

Voter intimidation and disenfranchisement is a far greater risk to this democracy than voter fraud. When people turn out to vote - Democrats win. That's why the repukes try so hard to demonize ACORN and any voter registration effort. They hate voters!

7. Well, let's see here.
The GOP is the party of torture, perpetual war, the destruction of the middle class, and the shredding of the U.S. Constitution. Recently, it has become clear that they put corporate profits over the lives of the sick and support rape. Now they back voter intimidation. How the fuck can they even get 10% of the electorate to support them with a record like that?

9. OMG, did you read the last line of the article?
"In seeking to end the order, Republicans argued that voter fraud had surpassed vote suppression as a threat to the election process."

Fuck that. Voting MACHINE fraud and caging tactics have far surpassed anything else, and voter fraud doesn't exist.

10. They have to hold to that, because anything that impedes their ability
to CHEAT will keep them from the total control that they are always seeking.
