US-Russian nuclear agreement expires

The US and Russia have failed to finalise a new agreement to reduce their nuclear weapons arsenal before the existing treaty expired.

For months, officials from the US and Russia have been negotiating a new strategic arms reduction treaty.

The plan was to have it finished and signed by the two countries' presidents before midnight on December 4, the expiry date of the first START agreement, which had been in place since 1991.
