Five AIG execs say may quit over pay: report
Wall Street Journal says they're upset that pay czar cut their compensation

Five senior executives at American International Group told the bailed-out insurer last week they may quit if their compensation was cut significantly by the U.S. pay czar, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The five senior AIG executives indicated on December 1, in written notices, that they were prepared to leave by year-end, the paper reported, citing unnamed sources. Two of them changed their minds over the weekend, the paper added.

AIG, which was propped up by the government with some $180 billion in taxpayer funds, has been sparring with the Obama administration's pay czar, Kenneth Feinberg, over executive compensation.

Even Chief Executive Robert Benmosche reportedly threatened to quit last month, in part because he did not have discretion over pay packages for top executives.

Feinberg has cut average compensation for the 25 best-paid employees at companies that received multiple bailouts and is setting guidelines for pay for the next 75.

135. They ran their business into a cesspool, then get all pissy over having to take a pay cut...
They committed fraud.

The AIG bailout -- at $170 billion and rising -- may end up as the costliest rescue of a single firm in history. There is much debate about bonuses paid to AIG's executives. But there is far too little debate on the government's willingness to back all of AIG's obligations.

The company claims any failure by the government to do so would have catastrophic consequences. This claim is exaggerated. Serious consideration should be given to forcing AIG's partners in derivative transactions -- which are mainly buyers of credit default swaps from the company -- to take a substantial haircut.

AIG is a holding company, conducting most of its business through insurance subsidiaries organized as separate legal entities. The financial products subsidiary, which has produced the huge losses from derivative transactions that brought AIG down, is also a separate legal entity -- but AIG has guaranteed the subsidiary's obligations.

While AIG has thus far been able to cover derivative losses using government funds, the possibility of large additional losses must be recognized. AIG recently stated that it still has about $1.6 trillion in "notional derivatives exposure." Suppose, for example, that AIG ends up with losses equal to, say, 20% of this exposure -- that is, $320 billion. Suppose also that the value of AIG's current assets, including the shares in its insurance subsidiaries, is $160 billion. In this scenario, the government's fully backing AIG's obligations would produce an additional loss of $160 billion for taxpayers. Should the government be prepared to do so?

That's "scum of the Earth."

Fantistic comment. Well articulated. Its amazing to see the extensive amount of responses on here on this subject. Has the public finally had enough of the financial mismanagement of the financial industry? At least enough to continue vocalizing their discontent?

I wrote, Unless you don't believe selling something you don't have isn't "fraud?"

It should have read:
Unless you don't believe selling something you don't have is "fraud?"
or
Unless you believe selling something you don't have isn't "fraud?"

94. Yep. The REASON "golden parachutes" were created

(OK... it's because "they could"... but ignoring that)

was because it is assumed that someone at that level can't just put out a resume and find a similar position. CEOs often have decades of experience with a specific company... and that experience (while valuable where earned) just doesn't transfer to other firms.

And where the experiene is most valuable is with companies that are likely to be direct competitors.

I doubt that. These creeps seem to materialize at other companies quite quickly. I think golden parachutes are just another example of their huge greed. Besides, one year of their salary would keep most families in clover for a lifetime.

There are millions of bright people who do not have egos and greed the size of galaxies who could prove just as capable if not more capable than they have. They could do the same fucking job and probably do it better for a fraction of the cost to taxpayers.

or they won't have any incentive to work and prosper, while at the same time we are not supposed to give any money or help to the poor because then they won't have any incentive to work and better themselves.

We need to come to terms with the fact that our economic system is based on institutionalized ripping off...

108. Don't let the door hit your buts, rich elite pigs
One thing Obama said, and I dearly hope he keeps following up on is this:

(Quoted best I remember)

"If a business is doing OK, I don't care what it does, what it pays it's employees, what the boss takes as long as it obeys US laws. However, if a business is in trouble and it asks the Government for help, it is making the government, the taxpayers a partner. As partners loaning money in hopes of keeping them afloat, we have a stake in it and can set reasonable demands and limits on excess."

-------------
Frankly, I think a big "Nationalization" should be implemented. The big companies have tons of good worker and ex-workers who can run the whole things quite well. The damage is done by a bunch of elites who live in ways the Gods of Ancient Rome would have called excessive and then run "Multi story outhouse" methods of management, creating a stifling, choking work enviornment with no flexibility and high stress.

Take the corporations. Kick the CEOs out, give the investors the shaft. They like to propagandize the media against "Welfare Bums that think the world owes them a living..." Well they are by far the worst of the lot, and just because they've corruptly hoarded money doesn't mean we owe them a living. Without needing money, more money, even more money just not to cause a panic, most companies could behave responsibly and pay their workers well.

It's the CEO, and the "Rich Investor" that should be "Downsized".

141. So, will these 5 assholes be to big to quit?
If anyone in our government asks these crooks to stay, "oh please, screw us some more, we haven't had enough yet!", I will be done with the whole process.

I know our nation is an oligarchy but I like to at least live in the charade that what we say still matters, even though I feel like I'm yelling into black pit most of the time.

165. Will make US more competitive!
Great!

Let this be the start of reining in all corporate salaries which are way too high. It is not the American worker who is uncompetitive, it is American management across the board be they Insurance, banking, or production. They typically 10 times, or more, what a Japanese or Euro boss makes.

I am sure there are qualified workers who would be happy to replace them.

179. Jackass Money-Hogs
Come on AIG people/others like them.
You already make more money than most other people, just take the cut and still be rich. Jesus freaking christ.
The world would be a much better place (or country, i guess) if we just took the high up people in corporate America and put a cap on their pay. They don't need that much money and it would most likely fix a lot of problems. Somehow I don't see the Capitalism today letting that happen, though...

185. Why weren't they fired? The sheer arrogance and greed
of these people is stunning. Sometimes I think they are mentally ill. They have no grasp on reality, and the government is like an indulgent parent, who, instead of taking control of their out-of-control children, keeps on rewarding their bad behavior.

Disgusting, despicable behavior when so many are starving in this country, one in every four children on food stamps eg, as a result of their greed.

compensation for a loser/losers who scalp taxpayers' money when they've finished running the corps. into the ground. ceo only promotes short-term targets, promotes zooming the stock prices(gaming the system), emptying the pensions, & chasing the world's cheapest worker.
