Ex-congressman accused in youth soccer scuffle


JACKSON, Miss. – Police are investigating a fight between a former Mississippi congressman and a youth-league soccer coach after a weekend game.

Madison Police Sgt. Robert Sanders says Chip Pickering, a Republican who served 12 years in the U.S. House, was accused of attacking coach Chris Hester on Sunday. Sanders says Pickering also filed an affidavit accusing Hester of hitting him.

Hester, who claims he was wearing a neck brace at the time, says Pickering yelled at him as he was leaving. Hester says that Pickering pulled him from his vehicle, and that spectators had to separate the two.

Both men could be charged with misdemeanor simple assault.

4. Another one of those youth soccer dickhead parents. Of course, it's not JUST soccer parents

who are rabid idjits at their kids' games. It's part of the culture in youth sports. Sad to say.

I coached youth soccer (girls' teams) for seven years. Loved it. Great kids. Great parents. But the heat of the passion of the game turned some really nice people into total assholes. Most of the time they didn't even know the rules but screamed and yelled as if the refs were incompetent even when the refs were making accurate calls.

Our club's rule was that parents were not allowed to berate the refs or other players. If they did, the coach was authorized to ask them to leave--before the ref had to--or to pull their child from the match. That usually quelled any serious catcalling and ugliness.

when it started we`d have only a few parents on the side lines. about the last 7yrs to many parents thought it was little league or football. we had a ref who threatened arrest but the parent left the soccer fields and ended up trying to watch the game from a 1000ft away.... all in all 90% of the parents did`t have a clue about soccer and that was fine with me.the other 10%.....their kid and i could have done without them.
