Fox News fiddles with climate change polling

December 08, 2009 6:47 am ET by Simon Maloy

Do you want to know how serious the "Climategate" hacked e-mail scandal is? It's so serious that, according to Rasmussen, 120 percent of Americans have an opinion on it. At least, that's what I learned from watching the December 4 edition of Fox & Friends, which featured this graphic:

Fox News' graphics department added together the "very likely" and "somewhat likely" numbers to reach 59 percent, and called that new group "somewhat likely." Then, for some reason, they threw in the 35 percent "very likely" as their own group, even though they already added that number to the "somewhat likely" percentage. Then they mashed together the "not very likely" and "not likely at all" groups, and threw the 15 percent who were unsure into the waste bin. Voila -- 120 percent.

As such, Fox News' presentation of the data made it seem as though 94 percent of Americans think it's at least "somewhat likely" that climate scientists falsify their research data.

3. Their lies are so clumsy

but it doesn't seem to matter to the Fox News believers.

Just like Bushco they like to use the "incompetence" excuse.

4. Well can you expect them?
Why does anyone believe in the first place that the people at Fox know how to do math? That requires higher level thinking ability which we all know they are pretty lacking on.

7. I believe that even FOX "News" is capable of elementary math, this is more like cynical manipulation
of their viewers.

It's the real kind of brain washing, that Charles Gibson was projecting on to the mythical "liberal" media in his book.

10. Yes
if called on it they'll say "it isn't a lie, it's a mistake". Deliberate incompetence gives them deniability.

9. We all know
they sure as the devil can't report on the news accurately even when it is happening right before their eyes. Then why would any INTELLIGENT person expect them to get a poll correct. That takes some degree of skill.

16. Screen shot taken out of context
Those numbers were taken out of context. Here it is in context:

"Fifty-nine percent (59%) of Americans say it’s at least somewhat likely that some scientists have falsified research data to support their own theories and beliefs about global warming. Thirty-five percent (35%) say it’s Very Likely. Just 26% say it’s not very or not at all likely that some scientists falsified data. "

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/current_events/environment_energy/americans_skeptical_of_science_behind_global_warming

59% is all of the people who though that it as "at least" somewhat likely (meaning that this figure also includes the "very likely" stat)

Said a different way, 59% believe that the data is falsified, but the 39% are more sure than the remaining 24%.

I wonder if we listened to the audio that went along with this screen shot, that might be explained.

22. You should already know the difference.
There is no conflict between the terms unless you use them incorrectly or you don't understand the differences or you deliberately misconstrue them in order to sow confusion and doubt.

Global warming is necessary for life as we know it to thrive on this planet. Global climate change in this context on the other hand, is what happens when a technologically advanced society removes a greenhouse gas such as carbon dioxide from sequestration, and adds it back into the biosphere in vast quantities over what would be there naturally. It alters the energy dynamic of the natural atmospheric and oceanic systems, thus changing climatic patterns. It also tends to heat up the atmosphere. Hopefully it will not get so hot that the biosphere will no longer support complex lifeforms such as ourselves.

Never regard cable media, especially FOX 'news', as a reliable source of information.

So what this is truly all about is the fact earth has no chance of protecting its self and the environment as it stands today...And we are going to save it?...And that the earth has never been through something like this before. Without our help its going to kill everyone because nature cant do it on its own...Everything I have ever read and was taught was that over millions of years the earth has done a petty good job of it on its own...I mean its still here...so this isn't really about the earth..its about us...the earth will just be fine. Its been through many many disasters without any help from man....I think before we ever get to a point where man kind will be wiped out, a force at lot larger than climate change will kill us off...there is nothing at all wrong with climate change...Like you stated "Global warming is necessary for life as we know it to thrive on this planet"...In one of my other post I mentioned that it would be beneficial for global warming. (as you agree)...It would cut out so much carbon ,CO2 and burning of fossil fuels to heat homes and industries in the northern regions. Global warming would cut the need of burning tons and tons of fossil fuels, The system would have a chance to balance out....so wouldn't that be a way to curb ,(in a back door way),A climate disaster, with man and nature working together?....Im not saying we shouldn't be a care taker of our planet but its out of contol...$$$$$$ with big Als hypocrisy and double standards.( not to mention our tax dollars going to unfounded studies). He needs a catastrophe and a following to make money...just another capitalist pig..take advantage of the misinformed and profit off of them..how many millions is he worth now?..Flys everywhere to tell others not to...Drives big SUVs to places to tell others not to...Burns more energy in his home than my whole neighborhood,
the guy is a looser!...ok I'm done ranting
