Nelson Abortion Amendment Fails
David Kurtz | December 8, 2009, 5:34PM

The Senate just voted to table Sen. Ben Nelson's abortion amendment to the health care bill, effectively killing it and forcing Nelson to put up or shut up on his threat to filibuster the bill if the restrictions on abortion coverage were not included.

8. you're kidding right? You forget Nelson is a Dem and still has the potential to filibuster?
The PO is publicly being discussed as "dropped" and you say great job? The Nelson Bill was an abomination for sure but it likely was an excuse to get rid of the PO. There is nothing good about this whole scenario.

59. Well they may be getting shit done, but why is MSNBC
doing stories that indicate the damn bill is watered down? I see Senators like Sherrod Brown, or my Senator Boxer say (on Ed Show) saying we'll have a strong Public-Op, but I don't know who to believe at this point. Now they want to have this buy-in to Medicare for those 55-plus. So what about those of us under 55? I'll tell ya, the Nelsons, Lincolns, and Baucus' of the Senate are determined to "F" this up for us. And yes I Include that POS Lie-berman.

You got that right - *shit* is getting done. The public option is dead. The insurance lobby is laughing so hard its wetting itself and Lieberman has proved that he and the rest of the Republicans have more power than Reid. Reid needs to be fired and Lieberman stripped of his chairmanships.

Democrats = useless.

If Healthcare completely crumbles, which as it stands now, it appears it will, Nelson should be loudly and frequently blamed for it. That should insure his exit from the senate floor - is he 'up' in '10?

50. Women of childbearing age will not be offered a public option,
therefore Nelson's amendment is irrelevant. On the other hand, those 55 and up who do not have other insurance will be able to choose to pay for their Medicare coverage early and be covered by Medicare.

Women over 55 do not have abortions although (while in the hospital for another reason) I met a woman who was 51 or so who was having an abortion.

25.  Boxer Moves to Table Nelson’s Abortion Amendment (Update: Motion Tabled)

Boxer Moves to Table Nelson’s Abortion Amendment (Update: Motion Tabled)
Boxer Moves to Table Nelson’s Abortion Amendment (Update: Motion Tabled)
By: David Dayen Tuesday December 8, 2009 2:25 pm

Barbara Boxer has just offered a motion to table the Nelson amendment that would restrict abortion coverage access. Rather than requiring a 60-vote threshold or subject to a cloture vote, tabling the amendment needs an up or down vote to succeed. Tabling an amendment essentially kills it. Boxer obviously feels confident that she has 51 votes to table.

Voting is happening now.

…Blanche Lincoln voted to table. Everything else is as expected, for now.

…Kent Conrad just voted no on tabling the amendment. So did Byron Dorgan. There’s not a huge margin for error here.

…Mary Landrieu and Mark Begich just voted to table. As did Tim Johnson of South Dakota.

…Jon Tester votes aye. I’m really only mentioning the votes that are in any way in doubt.

…Evan Bayh votes no. That’s four Democratic no votes, by my count (add Ben Nelson)… oh, and Bob Casey, so that’s five.

…Susan Collins votes aye, and you would have to expect Olympia Snowe to follow suit. I think tabling is likely to pass, at this point.

…Joe Lieberman votes aye, along with Olympia Snowe, to table the Nelson amendment.

…Interesting to see the contrasts between the House and Senate. Over 55% of the House voted for the Stupak amendment, But I think we’ll get 56 or 57% of the Senate in the other direction. That’s a function of needing a larger fundraising base, and also a certain fellow in charge of the D-Trip named Rahm Emanuel.

So the Nelson amendment has been tabled by a vote of 54-45. Waiting on a roll call. I’m missing a couple Democrats who voted against tabling.

So the question becomes, what now?

Nelson: Failure Of My Abortion Amendment Makes It Harder For Me To Support Health Care Bill
Brian Beutler | December 8, 2009, 6:16PM

After his abortion amendment did not win the day on the Senate floor, Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) did not come out swinging. Though he insisted that the failure of his abortion amendment "makes it harder to be supportive" of Senate health care bill, he did not reiterate his pledge to filibuster the bill.

"We'll just have to see what develops," Nelson told reporters. "I have no plan B."

he has to stay there. He even looks like a republican, how could anybody vote for him and think he was a democrat. Guess he is worried that the Health Insurance money he has been pocketing will dry up. But he looks like he is dried up...since a person has to be so old to get elected how come they don't kick these OLD MEN AND WOMEN out at a certain age. They sit on their a** in congress for so long they think they own it. And forget they were elected to serve the public and what the public wants. Not what their so called conscience dictates. And damn it I can call him old and not be discriminating against him because I am 77 years old. You can't discriminate against a person if you are of the same group.

Once the government gives you a voucher to buy insurance, it should not be for government to meddle in what kind of health services are available to buyers on the exchange. A dangerous precedent would be set.

42. Cautiously Optimistic
Perhaps the Congress realizes that even if Obama is giving the right a lot of ground, that WE will not allow them to, nor will we forget who really pushed the Democrats away from the right.

I do not excuse the fact that Obama should have used his bully pulpit a bit better, but there is one good thing that will come out of his style; the DINOS that have infected congress can no longer pretend that they are just the Hostages who would give us the moon, but cannot because of those Mean Ole GOP guys that get the Oval Office. Regardless of what happens, the nation is now much more aware that Congress is in control, and THAT is where the pressure needs to be placed. A few Third Party people in Congress will do much much more than Nader or Kucinich ever could, just ask Bernie sanders (on the positive side) or Joe Lieberman (on the negative side), both these two are having more effect than many.

Of course, we could blow it by letting Palin in 2012, or, as if more likely, whoever Palin will provide cover for (example : see, we voted for Romney, he is not as bad as Palin!) As disappointing as Obama's first year has been, a GOP member can and will make things worse, as no matter who or what the GOP puts on the TV, we all know that a GOP victory in 2012 is the THIRD time Dick Cheney will be the puppetmaster in the Oval Office. Call me a Yellow Dog Democrat is you want, but Dick Cheney will be a threat until the day he dies. Even if he was sent off to the Hague, he would still be a threat.

66. Don't You Get It?
If this bill has no public option and we are being forced under penalty of law to make the Insurance corporations Rich beyond measure because all 40 million or so uninsured will now be FORCED.... thats right I said it FORCED through penalty of law to purchase insurance. Every piece of legislation I looked at starts subsidizing under 40K and works downward on a curve.

Every Insurance Comp has also stated they will UP the COSTS because they will be FORCED to cover pre-exisiting conditions.

Every Employer is only required to cover a portion 72 percent of the costs. Heck even some employers give 100 percent now but they won't when this is law.

THIS IS A TRAVESTY. Government is mandating under penalty of law that the PEOPLE must purchase something. I am lost how this is even remotely Progressive let alone Liberal?

Clue me in.

I thought Medicare for all, Single Payer remimbursed at medicare rates was the only real option. So we fight for something that hurts the people? I don't get it? Is this ego driven?

78. Late update: from TPM
Late Update: Interestingly, Nelson was conciliatory after the vote, declining to reiterate his filibuster threat. Could it be that Nelson much prefers being "in play"?

88. I will reserve my glee until I see the final bill.
nelsons amendment was destined to fail. No surprise there. And I'm waiting to see if asshole nelson filibusters as he promised. I don't think he will, like most DINO's he's all talk and no action.

However, we have yet to hear the details of this "double top secret" agreement that was reached by the gang of 10.

The devil is in the details folks. Don't go celebrating just yet.

94. Just another Old Bag (from either party)
trying to run this country into the ground. We need the next generation to step up and fast. These old prunes have proven time and time again (through their failures and bad judgment)that their time has come. Look like a fossil, think like a fossil. Just try to take away a woman's right to choose.....even trying to use tactics to slip something through the back door won't work. Like any woman wants an old anal wart like Nelson deciding for them what they can or cannot do with their bodies. It's time to spread those wrinkled old cheeks and remove the warts.
