GOP congressman goes nuts over White House acorn cookies
Source: Raw Story

Were they acorn cookies, or ACORN cookies? US House Rep. Steve King (R-IA) says it was the latter. The congressman known for being one of the most fierce opponents of the community organization ACORN was evidently shocked when he was served acorn-shaped chocolate cookies at the White House Christmas Ball Monday night.

"At the WH Christmas Ball Monday night, they served ACORN cookies," King announced on Twitter, in reference to the community organizing group with that acronym. It's hard to say why the White House would have chosen cookies in that shape, given the recent connotations of the word "acorn" in political circles. Perhaps it was unintentional, or perhaps it was a bit of a jab at the Republicans in attendance.

But for Rep. King, the message was clear. "I didn't expect to see such stark symbolism," he wrote in an http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/12/09/white-houses-acorn-cookies-surprises-republican-lawmaker/">email to Fox "News".

ACORN's activities have been an obsession of King's since well before this fall's controversy, when conservative activists posing as a pimp and prostitute captured on video ACORN employees advising them on how to hide evidence of a prostitution business and smuggle people into the country. In May, King called for congressional hearings into ACORN's finances, and in September he described President Barack Obama as the "chief organizer" of ACORN.

49. I think--- a real journalist
should do a back ground check on King. Someone so opposed to an organization or such, has to have a reason. Maybe there is something there worth checking out. But nawh, they won't. We don't have journalist anymore. We have readers of the news -- those who read what the - fabricators of the news write.

Could it possibly be that the so-called "stark symbolism" has nothing to do with the jackass King and more to do with the winter/holiday season, if not make a festive-looking desert? And of course he would immediately fire off an e-mail message to his handlers at Faux News.

Nor have I ever seen anyone else make that choice for Christmas cookies. Holly, candy cane, poinsettia, bell, tree, gingerbread person, and on and on yes, but never an acorn. Just sayin'.

Personally, I hope the First Family and/or the pastry chef WAS sending a message.

The Acorn: A Symbolic Seed of Human Potential
From One Human, Great Things Can Grow

By Chris Dunmire, CurrentLiving.com

Ralph Waldo Emerson is credited with the quote, “The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.”

That’s quite a feat, when you really think about what it means.

That means that from one tiny acorn that falls from an oak tree, a thousand more forests can grow. One acorn. Hundreds of trees. A thousand forest

21. Actually acorns were a primary food source for Native peoples in this land
and acorn cookies are awesome!

I have made acorn bread and roasted acorn coffee and made acorn flour and porridge (you can mix it with oatmeal) which is naturally sweet and delicious and good for you.

Most tribes in what is now North America would store up about 500 or so pounds per person for winter nourishment, bread, stews, and medicine.

Plus it is a free food full of vitamins and minerals and protein and fatty acids.

Maybe that is what they had at the white house!

I know Obama made some resolutions on native rights issues recently and Native foods would likely have made it to their menu.

You might think it is nutty or squirrelly but acorns are a GREAT and fee ood we all could benefit from.

And the organization is cool too...

22. acorn molasses cookie recipe

Acorn Molasses Cookies

These cookies are heavenly, although the spices and molasses tend to dominate the flavor of the acorns, so a person wouldn’t know they had acorns in them unless you told them. A good way to sneak some into a skeptic!

¾ cup brown sugar
¾ cup butter
1 lg. egg
¾ cup molasses
1 1/4 cups acorn flour
1 ½ cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
1 ½ tsp ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
½ tsp allspice

1. Cream the brown sugar and butter together.
2. Add egg and molasses, and mix thoroughly.
3. In a separate bowl, mix together flour, acorn flour, baking soda, salt and spices.
4. Add dry ingredients to wet and mix thoroughly. Batter should be soft rather than stiff, but not runny.
5. Drop by rounded spoonfuls on to a cookie sheet. Flatten then with your palm and sprinkle with sugar crystals.
6. Bake at 325 for 8-10 minutes. Be sure not to over-bake, as the bottoms burn easily.

To make these cookies extra special good, cream together 1 package of softened cream cheese and 3 Tablespoons of maple syrup. Frost the bottom side of a cookie and stick another cookie on, creating a cookie sandwich. Scrumpdillyiscious!!!!

Edited on Fri Dec-11-09 03:34 PM by Liberation Angel
Native folks used both. You need to boil the acorns and pour off the water to get the tannins out (which are bitter) and then grind it with any kind of grinder. There are directions for this online.

I hven't searched for buying online but fresh acorns (no insect holes) can be gathered pretty much anytime even in winter. They keep well and sprout after freezing and thawing (sometimes before) and I soetimes grind up the sprouted acorns too. They alos make a great hot drink when boiled.

After grinding you roast the flour or toast it til it gets a sweet nutty flavor.

On edit: apparently some Korean markets sell acorn flour (maybe other oriental markets too?)

I do not know if it has the same name though.

55. Acorn paranoid blues
I wus lookin' high an' low for them acorns everywhere,
I wus lookin' in the sink an' underneath the chair.
I looked way up my chimney hole,
I even looked deep inside my toilet bowl.
They got away . . .

61. and a WH party, at that - hasn't the WH learned these RW nutjobs won't work with the WH?
Obama keeps trying to bring the ReichWing into the fold of reasonableness and solving the country's many problems left by BushCo, but the RW just wants to destroy everything Obama stands for. Forget these nuts, and work with those who want to solve problems, I say.

66. ROFL
I don't know what would be funnier: if this paranoid nutbag imagined the whole thing, or if they actually did make acorn shaped cookies to piss off the GOPers. Either way, it would be extremely hilarious.

74. +1
These folks are are so easily exposed for the nutters they ate- and rarely do they fail to take the bait.

...and as we can see, it doesn't take much prompting for them to completely lose the plot.

84. Typical. Steve King is obsessed with Obama's "acorns".
Does King touch himself in an inappropriate manner whenever he thinks about liberals?
