W.H. to Reid: Cut deal with Lieberman
Source: Politico.com

The White House is encouraging Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to cut a deal with Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), which would mean eliminating the proposed Medicare expansion in the health reform bill, according to an official close to the negotiations.

But Reid is described as so frustrated with Lieberman that he is not ready to sacrifice a key element of the health care bill, and first wants to see the Congressional Budget Office cost analysis of the Medicare buy-in. The analysis is expected early this week.

"There is a weariness and a lot of frustration that one person is holding up the will of 59 others," the official said. “There is still too much anger and confusion at one particular senator’s reversal.”

Lieberman threw health care reform into doubt Sunday when he told Reid that he would filibuster the bill if it allowed Americans ages 55 to 64 to purchase coverage in Medicare. His comments on CBS’s “Face the Nation” set off a series of private meetings Sunday between the Senate leadership and top White House aides, including Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, who encouraged Reid to cut the deal with Lieberman, the official said. The White House declined to comment.

1. Give Obama more time
And maybe he'll deny Americans health care altogether. (But still make us pay the premiums)

It might be a good idea---are all those Lie-man campaign donations documented? Is Hadassah reporting on all her income, including the Susan Komen for the Cure income and all the other "good works" she does for pay?

 Just wonderin'.

76. That's Senator Lieberman to you Mr. Chicago tough guy.
I hope some of those weak tinklers in the White House are planning on spending most of 2012 knocking on doors and working hard to elect Democrats in Washington St's 3rd Congressional district cause I don't won't support anyone backing down to Lieberman.

151. At this point, I think the whole health care bill is a fiasco.
I think we should start organizing for a Kucinich challenge to Obama in 2012. Maybe that will change the chemistry in D.C.

I did not think Kucinich was electable last time. But I think that by the time the Republicans have profiled themselves as the party of paleolithic Palin and Obama has shown himself to be a weak-willed man, Kucinich will be supported by a broad spectrum of Americans who just want someone who is honest and will stand by his principles.

36. Before I put you on ignore for being pedantic as well as wrong....
You should just try to educate yourself by looking at the lyrics. The O.P. may have spelled them wrong with a "k" instead of a "g" but any sane person would recognize that he was right.

I don't expect you to be able to google up the actual lyrics . I expect you to disappear when I press the next few buttons because I have no intention to listening to you argue on spelling errors in the future :)

You've been a naughty boy, you let your hair grow long.
I am eatting eggs, they are eatting eggs, I'm John Lennon,
Goo goo ga joob.

Mister City P'liceman sitting
Pretty little girls in a row.
See how they fly like a plane in the Sky, see how they fly.
I'm crying.
I'm cry, I'm crying, I'm cry.

Yellow custard, dripping from a large black pot.
Fisherman with his fishwife,
You've been a naughty boy and you let your face get dirty.
I am eatting eggs (woo), they are eatting eggs (woo), I am John Lennon,
Goo goo ga joob.

Sitting in an English garden waiting for the sun.

Walrus = 'goo goo g'joob'

Mrs. Robinson = 'koo koo kachoo'

Lots of idiots mix the two up because they only have a superficial recognition of the Beatles.

"Lots of idiots mix the two up because they only have a superficial recognition of the Beatles...."

Or (and I find this quite a bit more probable) because many people don't place the same amount of priority on pop music, instead allowing pop music that place in culture where it may belong-- the peripheries which warrant very little.

Koo-koo-ka-choo, goo-goo-ga-joob. "It's still rock n roll to me..."

Having problems with policy does not equal Obama hate, but obviously to you any kind of dissent equals hatred of our President. I cant help but to be reminded of the Bush defenders during his Presidency who labeled anyone who spoke out against his administration as unamerican. Not something I want to be associated with but go ahead and feel free.

And he was going against the Democratic Party LONG before he changed his affiliation.

The "O-Squad" is most certainly NOT the Democratic Party. Their values run contrary to the Democratic Party and everything this site stands for.

154. The O squad does not equal the Democratic Party
Ted Kennedy challenged Carter in 1980 if I am not mistaken. The sitting president does not incarnate the party.

I remember reading hearing something from Obama about Reagan during the primaries and thinking "red light" on this guy. Obama thinks he is a Democrat, but as an old-time Democrat who remembers a little about the Truman era, Obama is acting less and less like a Democrat. Democrats are fighter. Obama does not act like a fighter.

Possible subtext: "Get a bill passed, no matter what it takes. We'll fix it in conference."

My response, however, is "We cut a deal with Lieberman; he reneged. I'm not anxious to have a running swipe at the football he's holding again." Why do the progressives have to be the ones negotiating and compromising? I thought we won the election in 2008.

How about just letting them REALLY filibuster....not just get their way for threatening to.

The American People need to see the GOP (and their enablers) reading from the phone book for days to stop people from getting meaningful HCR. It would be a great image to play in 2010 campaign ads, no?

Besides, the minute the Senate is in danger of missing a big wig cocktail party, the filibuster will be over.

When did just the threat of a filibuster stop everything in its tracks? Make the GOP work for their obstructionism.

125. Right. I said the same on another thread last night.
The MSM would be forced to report the obstructionism instead of just writing that to pass the bill "it takes 60 votes", instead of reporting the truth that it only takes 60 votes to block a filibuster, not to pass a bill.

If the #'s in Congress were reversed how fast do you think the 'pukes would say, "Go ahead and filibuster"?

Incomprehensible capitulation like this is why people are starting to believe Politico about the WH.

White House Denies Report They’re Pushing For Deal With Lieberman
The White House is shooting down a report in Politico claiming that Obama advisers are pushing Harry Reid to cut a deal to dump the Medicare buy-in to make Joe Lieberman happy.

White House senior communications adviser Dan Pfeiffer emails me:

“The report is inaccurate. The White House is not pushing Senator Reid in any direction. We are working hand in hand with the Senate Leadership to work through the various issues and pass health reform as soon as possible.”

Whatever the case, it doesn’t seem unlikely that the Medicare buy-in will be dropped if that’s what is necessary to get to 60 votes. But the White House insists it’s not pushing for any such thing, at least for now.

Edited on Mon Dec-14-09 03:04 PM by LaPera
has been passed & achieved, when of course without a public option there isn't and can't be any real reform to the health care insurance industry that has fucked us up for so many years, with their profits above people's health.

Emanuel just plays politics, he doesn't give one shit about all the people that are hurting and dying, DIRECTLY because of the insurance corporations greed & lust for their huge obscene profits in keeping the status quo.

Such corporate DLC assholes that we have in power now....it's never been about real reform, just image to parade around to say that there is now health care reform, when it's really all about to simply get re-elected.

How can anyone have faith in these cocksuckers in control, like Rahm Emanuel?

Fuck them ALL Harry and pass a strong public option bill with "Reconciliation" a simple majority 51% - for the people.

They claim that Reid could placate Unholy Joe by dropping the Medicare buy-in, but the latter has already said that his main objection is the presence of any form of public option, even a triggered one, and also to any form of "government-managed" plan (by which, I assume, he means the OPM system modeled on the FEHB plan. Medicare is only a distant second in his concerns. Therefore, dropping Medicare, in and of itself, would do nothing to change his position, unless we first dropped everything else out of the bill (except the individual mandate, of course).

108. It was the Obama White House....
Edited on Mon Dec-14-09 03:52 PM by bvar22
...that had the Kucinich Amendment (allowing states to start their own single payer Health Insurance) removed from the House Bill after it had passed in committee. Pelosi removed it behind closed doors at the request of the White House.

Now, The Obama White House is again showing muscle to remove Medicare from the Senate version.

And there are those here who insist that the White House doesn't have any influence over bills in Congress.

Handing a $TRILLION Dollars of Public Money to the Health Insurance Cartel (Wall Street's !st Cousin) was THE PLAN from the start.
The "Public Option" was NEVER anything more than a shiny object to distract the peasants while the gift package was assembled for the Billionaires in the Health Insurance Industry.

Obama and The Democrats are going to transfer more WEALTH to the private sector than the Republicans could ever dream about.

Watch OUT!
"Entitlement Reform" (Social Security & Medicare) is NEXT on the DLC Hit List.

Mandatory insurance premiums without any benefit? No thanks.

If I put out money I better see a reason or a reward.

111. Question: How can you tell a party is dead?
Answer: When it cannot get anything done in a majority.

I will vote Obama's weak a*s out of office in 2012.

The only way to rebuild this party is to get rid of the corporatist in it ... anyway it needs to get done.

If there are no primary challengers, may they loose in the general election.

THEY. NEED. TO. GO.

So does Obama.

Please tell me there is another source for this. If not, just another attempt of a right wing rag to get liberals/progressives pissed at the President.

129. The White House? Seriously? Integrity? Transparency? Peace? Good Will?
And I wanted Obama to run before he even announced, so don't give me any crap. I am an Obama supporter who knows when the average American has been told to go to Hell. But, in the charming Obama manner we all know and love, you gotta love his diplomacy when he adds, "and enjoy the trip."

130.  White House To Reid: Cut A Deal With Lieberman
Source: The Huffington Post

Politico reported Monday afternoon that the White House is urging Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to cut a deal with Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) to pass health care reform.

The White House has denied the report. Senior communications adviser Dan Pfeiffer told Greg Sargent:

"The report is inaccurate. The White House is not pushing Senator Reid in any direction. We are working hand in hand with the Senate Leadership to work through the various issues and pass health reform as soon as possible."

Confusing, but for what it's worth: HuffPo is reporting it...

Link to Politico not showing up on my cut & paste, is on the Huffington Post page.

:D

Hey, I did a search for the exact title and nothing showed up
nor did I see this thread among the latest hundreds. What otherwise do you suggest to prevent this?

Other than mindreading?

edit: I see that it showed up under the Politico title. From now on, when there are two sources, I'll check both titles (didn't notice each site used a different title).
Even if its Politico -- can't stand that site & it's faux 'fair and balanced'.

But seriously, no need to be snotty about it. If I had seen it had already been brought to the attention of DUer's I would not have posted it.

148. Pardon me, but
where did this 'reconciliation' come from? From usage here I take it a request from Rahm to Reid regarding Lieberman? (Jesus!)

I didn't see the term in the Politico article, and I haven't had the chance to peruse much else on this subject the past couple days -- in any event, I have not seen it used regarding the principals mentioned above.

...if it was used as it seems, how exactly was the OP 'debunked' then? Sounds, on the surface, the same to me...

Link(s) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :hi:

159. I found the opposite of what was said above- *LINK*
http://emptywheel.firedoglake.com/2009/12/14/rahms-making-the-white-house-look-terrible/

'...two more reporters have confirmed Politico’s account: TNR’s Jonathan Cohn and HuffPo’s Ryan Grim. In fact both Cohn and Grim pass on the ID of this anonymous White House figure: Rahm Emanuel.'

'Rahm Emanuel visited Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in his Capitol office on Sunday evening and personally urged him to cut a deal with recalcitrant Sen. Joe Lieberman, two Democratic sources familiar with the situation said.'

That's the reality of these health "reform" negotiations. Anything REMOTELY good for the American people is gutted.
