Militants Kill 16 Afghan Police Officers
Source: NYT

KABUL, Afghanistan — Sixteen Afghan police officers were killed Monday in separate attacks on two checkpoints in different parts of the country.

Eight Afghan police officers were killed before dawn when militants opened fire on a checkpoint in the northeastern province of Baghlan, a local official said. Mohammad Akbar Barakzai, the provincial governor, said two of the attackers had also been killed.

“The checkpoint was set up on the main highway to provide security for the highway and villages around the area,” he said in a telephone interview.

The Interior Ministry reported that around the same time, eight officers were killed when militants attacked a police checkpoint in Lashkar Gah, the capital of troubled Helmand Province, in the south, according to The Associated Press.

3. Eight killed in Kabul suicide bomb blast in diplomatic quarter
A massive suicide car bomb ripped through the Afghan capital this morning – at the gates of an upmarket hotel – killing at least eight people and wounding dozens more.

The explosion sent thick smoke into the sky above Kabul’s diplomatic district, close to the British and Danish embassies.

Ahmad Jawad, an eyewitness, said that he saw six bodies on the unmade road immediately after the blast. The Afghanistan Ministry of Interior said that four men and four women were killed. Another 40 people were wounded.

“I was in my car when the bomb exploded in front of me,” Mr Jawad, 21, said. “The force of the blast turned my car around. When I got out I saw six bodies in front of the hotel.”
