Copenhagen climate talks yield no deal as leaders arrive
Source: RIA Novosti

The UN climate conference in Copenhagen has not produced a deal on climate change as leaders of 193 nations are beginning to arrive for a summit expected to sign a pact to fight global warming.

The nations have failed to reach an agreement on new targets for greenhouse gas emission cuts and financial aid to poor countries on efforts to curb climate change.

Negotiators worked through the night but failed to settle the differences. The main dispute was between the world's biggest polluters, the United States and China.

A representative of the WWF in Russia who is taking part in the conference as observer said the overnight talks brought a draft deal that offers no specific solutions or final targets.

2. I knew this whole thing would be a joke.
We are SOOOO fucked. :(

Methinks use of climate engineering as a last resort just got a lot closer, with this BS like this how the fuck are we ever going to solve the problem?

3. This would be a good outcome, actually
One of the leading climate scientists (can't remember who) was reported as saying on the eve of the conference that, given the lack of political will among the developed countries, any "deal" that comes out of this conference will be worse than no deal at all. At least it will then be clear that nations have to start the process over again.

The worst outcome -- which I fear is probably now the most likely outcome -- will be a pretend deal that enshrines inaction and is actually a backward step.

4. I confidently predict an out-and-out blizzard of self-congratulatory press releases

Beyond that, the fundamental message of Copenhagen comes through loud and clear (and I'm not talking about what the scientists are saying):

"Don't FUCK with our MONEY!!!!!!! Don't you DARE!!!!!!!!!!!"

5. Yep...
Turns out we are not prepared to sacrifice even a portion of our economic GROWTH rate to avoid mass migrations, famines, wars, etc.

We are truly a stupid species. As someone who will soon turn 60, I feel terribly bad about what awaits people who are now under about the age of about 30.

They are going to inherit a much-degraded world that will get worse and worse the older they get, and there's not a damn thing anyone intends to do to stop that from happening.

7. Actually, I like the idea of a physical meeting
There are some things real leaders can't do properly via webcam and keyboards.

As for where to have an international meeting of this sort, Europe is usually a good bet, cost-wise.

8. Not sure what they can't do via teleconference that they can do
face to face. I guess they can strangle each other. :)
