Franken Shuts Down Lieberman on Senate Floor
Edited on Thu Dec-17-09 05:50 PM by denem
Source: NYT / AP

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democratic Sen. Al Franken has taken the unusual step of shutting down Sen. Joe Lieberman on the Senate floor.

Lieberman, a Connecticut independent, currently is the target of liberal wrath over his opposition to a government-run insurance plan in the health care bill.

Franken was presiding over the Senate Thursday afternoon as Lieberman spoke about amendments he planned to offer to the bill. Lieberman asked for an additional 30 seconds to finish -- a routine request -- but Franken refused to grant the time.

Lieberman, appearing taken aback, said he'd submit the rest of his statement in writing. Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona came to his friend Lieberman's defense and criticized Franken's behavior as inappropriate.

134. Way to go, Al.....
Yep.
Isn't Al GREAT...!!!
As a matter of fact, he probably prevented a terrible tragedy,
from happening in the capital....
Had LIEberman continued for a few moments more, a senator or two,
most likely would have died from boredom....
On the other hand, it could have been a glorious moment,
had the senator(s) who died, been republican...!!!
IF ONLY WE WERE THAT LUCKY...!!!
LOL...!!!!

174. The article is slanted to demonize the Democrats postion.
It reflects the Republicans view of the Democrats opposition to their killing the public option which the writer characterizes as government run health care. It is a subtle attempt to fix this concept in the public's perception of the issue and reflects the conservative control of the media.

Who would do it to Franken? Republicans can't get their hand on the gavel and neither can the two Independents unlkess a D gives it to them - which won't happen with Lieberman.

Maybe Ben Nelson or any other right wing fucktard pretending to be a democrat? Let 'em if they dare.

82. Why not? Franken's not acting in bad faith.
Just because two sides can make similar complaints does not mean those complaints are of equal merit. The simple fact is that Lieberman has been extended every courtesy by the D. leadership. In response he is the one vote preventing meaningful health care reform, something this country despirately needs, from even being voted on. And it's not even for any principled reason no matter how misguided. It is simply personal greed.

Don't be surprised when we support the actions of Democrats. Franken demonstrated the only sort of behavior that Republicans understand or deserve. We'd be in a lot better shape today if this kind of forceful attitude had been dished out from Day One of the Obama administration. Thank you, Senator Franken.

I recently received a letter back regarding his lying, flip-flopity ways. It reminded me that if I had any concerns about the way the senate does things, I'd be best served by writing to my own state's reps.
I wrote back and told Joe that if he was gonna influence legislation that would have a bearing on me and mine, he'd damned sure hear from me - a continent away from Connecticut! PLUS... I promised I'd contribute to WHOEVER had a chance at unseating him the next time that possiblity arose. I don't care if it's the NAZI party candidate!

Lieberman, a Connecticut independent, currently is the target of liberal wrath over his opposition to a government-run insurance plan in the health care bill.

That is a talking point straight out of the GOP's ass, out of which they all talk.

No, our wrath has to do with them throwing single payer and public option under the bus and sucking long, hard and deep on the insurance industry dick--that's what we're pissed about.

A Senate staffer tells ThinkProgress that the reason Franken cut off Lieberman is because Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) office has been asking all presiding chairs to enforce the 10-minute rule for both sides. Franken was simply following the direction of leadership.

Instead of "The distinguished gentleman from...", they should speak regular English, and step on toes. The people deserve regular people representing them instead of these corrupt ass-licker's. I do not want "Jerry Springer" guests representing us, just normal people, speaking truth without all of the fake bullshit.

Franken is the man! Lieberman is a turncoat who basically stuck it in the Dems rears and now its time to get back at him. What he did to the healthcare bill is a travesty and I hope the real Democrats don't forget that. They ought to strip him of all his chairmanships and let him go crawling to the other side. I'm sure the Republicans will target Franken now as he is the consummate liberal in their eyes. Franken is a very smart guy and I think someone who has the best interests of his constituents in mind unlikes all those Republican assholes. I hope the Democrats make things as uncomfortable as possible for the Republicans. If they are going to obstructionists, screw 'em.

Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona came to his friend Lieberman's defense and criticized

... two quotes come to mind to tell McSame & LIEberman. One of them is "So?"

114. Somebody has the guts to shake things up?
"Comity," said John McCain?

What about, "Bi-Partisanship?"

Or, "Politics, as usual?"

"Change we can believe in?"

"Hope?"

I wonder if Al Franken was just bumbling, stumbling into a foolish gaff, or weather he is actually clever enough to put the screws to Lieberman. I'm sorry, but I'm just past the point of being able to trust any of them.

RL

P.S. Thanks for attaching the Y-Tube video.

I just sent this email as a CT resident via senate.gov to smokin joe:

"As there is no option for the health insurance debate "Issue" drop down, I chose Health care as the closest approximation.

My comment is that I hope I too can become as rich and notorious as you and your wife have become. Your insider support for the health insurance companies is blatantly obvious throughout your recent moves to block cloture of the senate health bill.

Please make sure and let me know if you need any funds for a 2012 campaign. I'm sure that I will be in the market for health insurance around then and will be paying you indirectly."

And Sen. McCain, when you suggest, by your campaign slogan, that you are the only one who puts "Country First" and insinuates that the other side of the aisle doesn't, you no longer get to call anyone else inappropriate.

171. On The Ed Show, some guest called criticism of Joe and Hadassah Lieberman
Edited on Fri Dec-18-09 05:30 AM by No Elephants
"liberals attacking liberals." And someone else called it liberals using hate speech on other liberals.

Joe Lieberman, a liberal? :wtf:

Calling Lieberman a turncoat, hate speech? :wtf:

The man was DLC, not liberal. Now, the man has become so extremely PNAC that George Bush kissed him and the RNC undercut its own candidate who ran against him (much as did the Democrats, but that's another story). And he campaigned for McCain Palin. AND, he "will not rule out running as a Republican" himself in 2012. That's not even a good Blue Dog, ffs, let alone a liberal.

And, since when do Democrats anywhere on the spectrum have a duty to support Democrats whose wives or other family members are employed by industries that the Democrat is frantically supporting, contrary to the Democratic Party's own platform?

Calling Lieberman a turncoat and pointing out his obvious conflicts of interest is liberals using hate speech on other liberals?

As Ed Schultz might say, "That's just pscho talk."

Folks, mark December 17, 2009 as the day the allegedly Democratic pundits and "spokespersons" jumped the shark.

And now for the good news: "Help is on the way" -- and you can be part of it.

MoveOn's anti Traitor Joe campaign has exceeded one million dollars. http://news.yahoo.com/s/huffpost/20091217/cm_huffpost/395962_200912171417

See also, http://liebermanmustgo.com/ That site has not raised a lot of money (yet?), but it has gotten many people to call their Senators about Joe.

(Personally, I'd put a higher priority on eliminating the fillibuster and 60 vote rules, and supporting Healthcare for America Now http://healthcareforamericanow.org/site/action_center/ but I can walk and chew gum at the same time, so "Joe must go."

and replace them with people who have the same fire in the belly as Franken we'd be getting somewhere. What's even more puzzling is repugs and their idea of this country turning into some evil socialist regime. If they'd step away from their deep-seated anger for a minute they'd realize that repugs and many Dems this day in age are only fighting over the same Chamber of Commerce votes and money to get elected, not standing up for the little guy.
