Storm expected to bring 20+ inches of snow to Northeast
Source: CNN

(CNN) -- Frigid East Coast states already blanketed with snow will get pummeled again Saturday with predictions of more than 20 inches in some areas.

Blizzard and winter storm warnings were in effect Saturday for metropolitan areas including Washington; Baltimore, Maryland; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, according to the National Weather Service.

Other southeastern states were also battered by the storm.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol said it had received more than 1,000 calls to assist in crashes or motorists stranded in 8 inches of snow.

2. It's thick down here in VA
There's a good 8+ inches already on the ground and it's still coming... I dug out my car at 6AM and I think I'm the only one able to get on the road in the whole neighborhood. People around here aren't used to this, that's for sure!

By the way, the snow is beautiful - it's perfect "fun" snow, soft, light, no ice or slush. If only I were a kid again I'd be hopping in a pile making snow forts and snow angels.

3. Here in Richmond, VA we've got about a foot of snow already
this morning, and it's still coming down. It started yesterday about 5 PM and has only stopped once in a while for very short periods. For a short period this morning it was sleeting, so there's a nice icy crust on top of the foot of snow. Yay.

13. We used to say heavy snow in DC
was God's gift to the Nation, as it shut down Congress and they could do no harm! We also said that if the Russians could figure out a way to make it snow in DC, they wouldn't have to nuke us, 'cause EVERYTHING grinds to a halt when it snows there!

12. 17in of snow on the ground in the Roanoke, Va area,
and expected to snow all day there. I just got off the phone with my sister who lives in Clifton Forge, VA, about 40 north of Roanoke and 40 miles east of the WV state line, right off of I-64. She says it's beautiful, but they're definitely stranded (in the house, fortunately!).

I-77 and I-81 are parking lots, thousands of motorists stranded. They've called out the Nat. Guard to help. Lots of wrecks, some involving snow plows. I haven't heard of any deaths yet, but it wouldn't surprise me.

If anyone is thinking about traveling in that area, please reconsider. Those mountains are treacherous, and it's just not worth the risk.

Stay off the roads and stay safe, DU!:hi:

But two hours ago, the cloud cover was thin enough for the sun to brighten things up, so I KNOW this could be the biggest thing this side of Hurricane Katrina.

18. It's already showed about 8 inches at the University of Maryland.
I'm stuck here until monday morning at best. Final exams, and the fall commencement ceremony has been canceled and every building in the university except for the student diners are closed. The only student diner open is the north campus diner, as the south campus diner (where my dorm is) is closed. I got some food to last me until tomorrow at best.

21. New castle De.
8-9" already, we are in the 1 to 3" per hour window, and expected to snow all day and night.
New Castle county declared an emergency, no cars allowed on the road, except emergency and if you are going to the hospital.
We are pretty much stuck in the house...blizzard conditions, high winds lots of drifting snow.

30. Ah, snow tires. I remember them from my youth, and college days.
Here in SoCal I don't think you can even buy them. Chains are the deal if you go up into the snow.

37. Are you kidding?
Snow tires are the bomb. You get vastly more traction in snow, ice, and slush and even on dry ground in very cold temperatures due to the softer tread compound.

Worth every penny. The Toyos did well on the minivan during a test run today. Not quite as good as the Nokian snow tires I had before but for $50 less per tire I didn't expect them to be.

32. 23.2" in Philadelphia--official readings
We're buried in almost 2 feet of snow. Today, as I was walking home from church, I saw a car and a cab stuck in the snow. They both kept giving their cars more and more gas, causing them to keep spinning their wheels going nowhere, instead of rocking the car back and forth. If you get stuck, rock the car back and forth by putting it in reverse and drive until you get enough traction to proceed.
