Abortion foes ‘stunned' (by Nelson D-Ne vote on health care)
Source: Omaha World Herald

By Joseph Morton

WASHINGTON — By declaring he will vote for the Senate health care bill, Ben Nelson touched off a firestorm of criticism Saturday on abortion.

Nebraska Right to Life said it had been “betrayed'' by the Nebraska Democrat, long an abortion opponent, who agreed to support compromise language on abortion.

His home-state colleague, Republican Mike Johanns, said he was “stunned and incredibly disappointed'' by Nelson's decision. And the chairman of the Nebraska Republican Party, Mark Fahleson, vowed that it was the “death knell'' for Nelson's political career.

Nelson said the outcry was over what amounted to a distinction without a difference on abortion.

8. Nice Main Stream Media spin....Karl Rove would be beaming with pride

Nelson, the fucker who inserted language into the senate bill to stop insurance companies from offering abortion services, if they participated in the exchange and reduced the ability of women to gain insurance for abortion procedures and coverage....

He is now the guy who took on opposition.

Whatever.

9. Insurers LOVE abortion. It saves them so much money. Their man, Nelson, was never
seriously gonna restrict insurance companies ability to encourage women to terminate their pregnancies.

As more young women contemplating pregnancy get private insurance (as opposed to the Medicaid they now use) look for insurers to have no- copay abortions...vs. $2500-5000 deductible obstetric care.

Right to Life never even had a chance.

27. Then why don't insurers love birth control?
Why aren't they rushing to offer coverage for all contraceptives, rather than fighting to not cover them?

Wouldn't that save them even more money vs obstetric care?

11. Giddy maybe, but stunned?
His language virtually guarantees that no insurance money, much less federal money, will ever go to pay for abortions.

I should think that they are jumping up an down for joy.

12. I have to wonder.
If nobody got an abortion, for a variety of personal reasons, but abortions were still legal, would not that amount to the same thing as what these people want?

Like make birth control methods readily available along with education in the use there of.

40. Nope
Because to too many "pro-lifers", contraception is the same as abortion.

and telling kids about sex will mean they will all go out and have sex with anything that moves. (because clearly teen age hormones don't' activate until they go to sex ed class)

Yes there are people against abortion but ok with contraception. But they seem to be a shrinking minority.

16. How did he do the right thing? He stopped millions of Americans
from getting coverage they badly needed. And as far as I know, he worked hard and succeeded to make sure women cannot be covered by public money when they get an abortion. He got what he wanted. He was serving two masters, neither of them the American people. His Insurance Industry buddies were thrilled with him and they are his real masters. The right-to-lifers aren't as happy, but when it's a choice between those groups, Ben is with the Private Insurance Ind. Once he scored for them, the game was over for him.

41. what it's like out there
Edited on Tue Dec-22-09 05:05 AM by NJCher
I know a bit about this state, having fled it in my early years because it is so back-asswards I couldn't tolerate living there another second.

Out in the hinterlands, you will drive and drive and drive and drive and drive forever without seeing much of anything BUT anti-abortion billboards. Yes, home-constructed ones, too, with awkwardly drawn pictures of vaginas with fetuses in them. Usually they use red paint for these and the message is always some imagined cry from the fetus about letting him/her live.

There's a brain drain out of that state and the midwest in general that has left the remaining population about 10 IQ points below the coasts.
