Two men have been charged in an investigation of fraudulent signature gathering in a failed recall campaign against Michigan House Speaker Andy Dillon, Michigan State Police said today.
State Police said they had been investigating since May 2008 claims of falsified signatures on petitions supporting the recall election in November 2008 and have arrested two men on charges authorized by Attorney General Mike Cox’s office.
Michael Bastianelli, 28, of Westland and Harvey Robinson, 39, of Redford have been arraigned in 16th District Court in Livonia, each on two felony counts of uttering and publishing and violating state election laws on petition gathering.
Trooper Robert Weimer of the State Police metro south post in Taylor said the men faked signatures of people in the Redford Township area who hadn’t signed the petition.
