AP sources: Al-Qaida link in failed plane attack

WASHINGTON – A Northwest Airlines passenger from Nigeria, who said he was acting on al-Qaida's instructions, tried to blow up the plane Friday as it was landing in Detroit, law enforcement and national security officials said.

Passengers subdued the man and may have prevented him from detonating the explosives, the officials said.

"We believe this was an attempted act of terrorism," a White House official said.

Federal officials imposed stricter screening measures after the incident.

6. Think about it: if we had Chinese Combat Troops here, would you have GOOD WILL toward that country?
NO, you would HATE the nation that OCCUPIES you.

Every DAY our combat troops remain in the ME, Americans are less safe both at home and abroad.

9. Since we're not occupying Nigeria, you don't have much of an argument.
"The Northwest passenger, identified as a Nigerian national "claiming to have extremist affiliation," was placed in custody and is being treated for burns suffered in the explosion, according to a federal government bulletin obtained by CNN from a source familiar with the investigation."

20. I agree with your assessment on this but here is a missing perspective...
Nigerians celebrate Christmas with setting off fire-crackers. The questions are, is this particular Nigerian visiting the United States for the very first time? Was he engaging in his country's practice of celebrating Christmas with fire-cracker? Did he choose the very worse place to engage in his celebrations?
Like you stated, the mere possession of fire-crackers and displaying them on a plane should get this idiot (and I do not use the word 'idiot' lightly) charged with terrorism. But let us remember not everyone is aware of our laws, security concerns and way of life, I am just saying...

25. Quick question, Texasmom, how did you know this suspect is not a christian?
I know a bit about Nigeria, there are Christians with predominantly Muslim names as there are Muslims with predominantly Christian names. One can not tell but that is not the point I am making here. What I would like you to consider is, cultures have different ways they collectively celebrate Christmas. In the United States, people regardless of their faith celebrate Christmas also known as Holidays with gift buying and giving. In Nigeria, folks regardless of their faith celebrate Christmas collectively by setting off fire-crackers like we do on July 4th. You do not have to be a Christian to engage in this practice.

And like I said, this idiot should be charged with terrorism for his action but let's not build an elaborate story around it. I am just saying...

11. Yeah well..
I think the initial firecracker reports were the truth and then someone in the administration saw it as an opportunity to turn it into terra, say al qaeda, and promote fear... again :sigh: Bu$h may be gone but the new boss is the same as the old and they need evidence of why we need to kill innocents in Afghanistan until the oil pipeline is finished.

Because the claim of someone randomly lighting up a few firecrackers on a passenger jet, to no real end, seems a bit sketchy as well.

31. This is why money should go toward security, not wars.
Iraq and Afghanistan are complete wastes of our time and resources. I thought we were fighting them to prevent this sort of thing. Anybody who supports these silly wars want to start rattling the saber at Nigeria now? This is insane. We need to redeploy back home, and focus on transportation and border security, because those are obviously the sources of our terrorism problems, assuming these attacks aren't inside jobs.

37. Taking this story as written this is a bullshit "Terra" propaganda piece.
Edited on Sat Dec-26-09 10:06 AM by shadowknows69
Doesn't pass the smell test at all. One law enforcement officer said this guy claimed to be AQ? Really? One source and then several saying not necessarily, but you go with the one source?

"One law enforcement official said the man claimed to have been instructed by al-Qaida to detonate the plane over U.S. soil, but other law enforcement officials cautioned that such claims could not be verified immediately, and said the man may have been acting independently — inspired but not specifically trained or ordered by terror groups."

NOt saying it wasn't a terrorist attempt, but this AP story is biased and it appears the WH is jumping on it to play the "fear" card. I'm waiting to see what the device ends up being and if this guy was being so heavily watched and was on no fly lists, then how the fuck did he get on an international flight?

Shouldn't we be invading Nigeria now as well since this was clearly an Al-Qaida attempt, but he wasn't trained anywhere, just inspired by AQ. So doesn't that make the whole country of Nigeria guilty of harboring terrorists? Let loose the drones of war President Hawkman!!!

Yeah...:sarcasm: on that last part..... :nuke:

42. Later reports in British press is that there is no direct Al-Qaeda connection
and that this was another lone wolf that aspired to be part of Al-Qaeda, similar to those US citizens that traveled to Pakistan seeking jihadist groups.

Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab had a valid US visa, according to BBC, and comes from a well-to-do Nigerian family in London.

University College London said it had a student with a similar name enrolled until mid-2008, but could not confirm whether it was the same person being questioned by US authorities.
