Suspect was on terror list, but not no-fly list
Edited on Sat Dec-26-09 03:26 PM by NewLIfeArea
Source: NBC, msnbc.com and news services

DETROIT - The suspect in the attack on a U.S.-bound flight has for at least two years been on a list that includes people with known or suspected contact or ties to terrorists, an official briefed on the attack told The Associated Press Saturday.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

The list, known as the Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment, is maintained by the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center and contains about 550,000 names.

By Sara Kehaulani Goo
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, August 20, 2004; Page A01

U.S. Sen. Edward M. "Ted" Kennedy said yesterday that he was stopped and questioned at airports on the East Coast five times in March because his name appeared on the government's secret "no-fly" list.

3. Apparently the no fly list is simply a prank list
And is not for serious purposes.

6. I think it may have been a spontaneous "cover you ass" list.
The disinformation and propaganda is so shoddy and ill-conceived that it would be comical if it wasn't so real-time and tragic. :(

10. It seems that its easier to get on the do not fly list if you're not flagged as
a terrorist becasue there have been countless examples of people who are on no fly lists because they simply have the same name. On one hand the stupidity is hilarious but the reality is that this sort of stupity can have tragic consequences. I think whoever drafted this policy should be out the door.

13. exactly!

Ive met an elderly couple(in their 60s) who are on the list just cos some idiot on some list has their firstname...

To think such idiotic policies...and such frightening lack of logic(like the terror list suspects not getting automatically added to the no fly list) are exhibited by those who are supposed to protect the nation...makes me really worry about the future!

9. Be a Democrat during Republican administration times -- like in the OP.
Looks like we have another Republican mess to clean up: years of using the the no-fly list as a prank rather than a tool.

11. Well OF COURSE he wasn't... they have to have room for 3-year-olds and Democrats on that
oh-so-special list. Terrorists are added only after one failed attempt...

Good. Grief.

12. Just a clerical error folks, nothing to see here.
they happen all the time.
But if this guy had succeeded in bring down that plane it would have been Obama's fault for not protecting this country....he then would have to invade Nigeria to show us he is protecting us from the bad guys.

Seems like the perfect thing for the Neo Cons had it been successful.

15. There is lots to see here thank you very much. This level of incompetance
should be swept under the rug. The very fact that the suspect's father warned the US should have tiggered a process to have him on a do not fly list. The fact that such a system isn't in place indicates incompetent management.

21. Air Marshals on No-Fly List
http://www.theaviationnation.com/2008/04/30/air-marshals-on-no-fly-list/

Audrey Hudson reports exclusively for the Washington Times that bureaucratic errors have landed some Air Marshals on the no-fly list.

That would be the same no-fly list that has allegedly undergone a rigorous clean up — thanks to new rules according to Homeland Security's acronymed agency known as TERP, or the Terrorist Encounter Review Process.

The moral of the story: acronyms don't solve problems. People do.

False identifications based on a terrorist no-fly list have for years prevented some federal air marshals from boarding flights they are assigned to protect, according to officials with the agency, which is finally taking steps to address the problem.Federal Air Marshals (FAMs) familiar with the situation say the mix-ups, in which marshals are mistaken for terrorism suspects who share the same names, have gone on for years — just as they have for thousands of members of the traveling public.

One air marshal said it has been "a major problem, where guys are denied boarding by the airline."

handy list, huh

Holy shit. I don't believe this. So now we are going to go through even more nonsense when flying?? This is such a crock of shit. OBL wins....we lose, again.

26. If he was on the terror list
he certainly should of been on the "Come behind the screen and remove most of your clothes and have a dog sniff your ass list."

Good grief, they do more to little old ladies than the do to guys on the watch list.

Still, I think the fault is with security at the point of origin of this flight.

31. It's also the same copany that was in charge of security...
in the London subway, during the 7/7 bombings, mysteriously all the surveillance cameras stop working before the attack that day, just like on 9/11, it's just a coincidence, I don't believe in conspiracy theories unless it's official and government approved.

I didnt know they were also the same company in the London bombings..but just because they were the company at all of the airports...and in the london bombings...doesnt mean they were also the same company in charge at the twin towers or building seven...umm does it?
