Bomber kills 5 at Shiite gathering in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD – A police official says a suicide bomber has detonated his explosives outside a Shiite Muslim gathering in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir, killing five people.

Police officer Tahir Qayum says 60 others were wounded in the attack Sunday in Muzaffarabad, the capital of the region.

Qayum says the attacker blew himself up as police tried to search him at a checkpoint set up outside the gathering, which is part of the annual monthlong mourning of the seventh century death of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson.

Qayum says two police were among the dead, and most of the wounded were Shiites attending the event.
