Gay marriage in Argentina is 1st in Latin America
Source: Associated Press

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – Two Argentine men were joined Monday in Latin America's first same-sex marriage, traveling to the southernmost tip of the Americas to find welcoming spot to wed.

Gay rights activists Jose Maria Di Bello and Alex Freyre were married in Ushauaia, the capital of Argentina's Tierra del Fuego state, in a ceremony witnessed by sate and federal officials.

"My knees didn't stop shaking," Di Bello said. "We are the first gay couple in Latin America to marry."

The couple had previously tried to marry in the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires but were thwarted by city officials citing conflicting judicial rulings. Argentina's Constitution is silent on whether marriage must be between a man and a woman, effectively leaving the matter to state and city officials.

2. What a creepy outfit that is... It would be a blight off the face of the earth to
ever see the American Family Association gone. One can only hope. People needing them to hold their marriage together should just go get divorced.

6. Argentina has a proud anti-clerical tradition.
There are many that are nominally Catholic, but certainly do not want the church to have any influence in secular affairs.

5. Yes congratulations!!
Except all the bad things will happen to all who have gay marriage. Y'know like bad cel phone reception, drop outs in digital TEE VEE, extra mold on cheese. The usual.

9. Argentine gay couple becomes first in region to marry
Source: BBC

Two Argentine men have become the first gay couple in Latin America to marry.

Alejandro Freyre, 39, and Jose Maria Di Bello, 41, tied the knot in a civil ceremony in the southern city of Ushuaia, in Tierra del Fuego province.

Gay marriage is illegal in Argentina. However, the Tierra del Fuego governor issued a special decree allowing the couple to wed there.

A judge in the capital, Buenos Aires, prevented the couple from marrying there earlier this month.

The men, who are both HIV-positive, had planned to get married on 1 December, world Aids day.

They eventually travelled to Tierra del Fuego, where they received the support of provincial governor Fabiana Rios.
