Repeal of Nebraska Tuition Bill Draws Support
Source: ABC News

Nebraska lawmakers are set to again consider repealing a law that offers tuition breaks to some illegal immigrants, and the looming debate is already drawing support.

A majority of lawmakers participating in an Associated Press pre-session survey say they support rescinding the offer made after lawmakers fought to override Gov. Dave Heineman's veto to pass the law in 2006.

Of the 33 senators responding to the survey, 18 said they support repealing the measure, while six said they don't. Eight said they're unsure. One senator, Amanda McGill of Lincoln, didn't check an answer, but offered a comment asking for more sanctions on businesses.

...

The 2006 law benefits students whose parents brought them to the United States illegally. It allows Nebraska high school graduates who aren't U.S. citizens or legal residents to attend a Nebraska public college or university at the in-state tuition rate. They must have lived in the state for at least three years and must be pursuing or promise to pursue legal status.

1. Makes sense...
Especially consiering you're "punished" with out-of-state tuition if you are a US citizen but don't happen to have residency in that state.

5. And pay for the books too
Sometimes they cost more than the tuition.

Room and board isn't cheap on campus either.

6. Yes, let's punish the children for the sins of the parents...
...and shoot ourselves in the foot by denying education to young people. Smart move, Cornholers.

8. that's not the point..
Is it really fair that an illegal alien pays less than the resident of another state? You complained about punishing people for the sins of their parents.. are you going to punish the out of state kid for his parents sins of living in another state?

9. The undocumented person who lives in the state pays taxes that support the university system
Edited on Tue Dec-29-09 09:14 PM by proud2BlibKansan
A resident of another state does not.

Seems pretty obvious who has actually earned a discount on tuition.

10. how exactly do they pay taxes?
People say that all the time, and I am sure that you can find someone that does. But, I have a lot of friends in construction who hire illegal immigrants. They get paid ten bucks an hour cash. How the hell do they pay taxes on that?

13. They pay more taxes that support the university system than a non-resident does
As I said, who is more worthy of a discounted tuition rate? Someone who lives there and supports the state economy or someone who does not live in that state?

14. oh i dunno..
An out of state resident is also paying federal taxes, some of which gets funneled back to the universities.

18. LOL but we don't enforce immigration laws
There is no way we can round up every undocumented person and deport them.

So we ignore them for the most part.

And the reality is they help our economy.

In addition to immigrant households contributing $133 billion dollars to the government, the American Immigration Lawyers Association also reports that immigrants "may add as much as $10 billion dollars to the economy each year" (Preston).

20. in general, residents just get in-state tuition
There's no inquiry into whether they've paid any particular amount of taxes.
