THE HAGUE, Netherlands — The Dutch government is releasing results of its investigation into the failed Christmas Day terror attack on a U.S.-bound airliner that took off from Amsterdam.

Interior Minister Guusje Ter Horst is holding a press conference Wednesday to outline a probe into how 23-year-old Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab managed to board the Northwest Airlines flight to Detroit from Nigeria by way of Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport.

A preliminary Dutch investigation has said that all security checks were correctly carried out in Amsterdam before the flight left and American authorities cleared the passenger list that included Abdulmutallab's name.

Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport will begin using full-body scanners within three weeks to scan people traveling to the United States, after consultations with U.S. authorities, the Dutch interior minister said on Wednesday.

The ministry also said ordinary security procedures were followed properly in the Christmas Day handling of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who is accused of trying to blow up a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit.

Dutch Interior Minister Guusje Ter Horst told a news conference in The Hague there was no evidence that Abdulmutallab had been to the Netherlands before the flight. The investigation is continuing into whether Abdulmutallab had assistance in Amsterdam, the ministry said.

5. MSNBC:Abdulmutallab was carrying a valid Nigerian passport and valid US Visa
3-hour layover
Abdulmutallab arrived in Amsterdam on Friday from Lagos, Nigeria. After a layover of less than three hours, he passed through a security check at the gate in Amsterdam, including a hand baggage scan and a metal detector.

Abdulmutallab was carrying a valid Nigerian passport and had a valid U.S. visa, the Dutch said.

"No suspicious matters which would give reason to classify the person involved as a high-risk passenger were identified during the security check," Ter Horst said.

6. Sky news? Isn't that Fox for the UK? Lie News?
Edited on Wed Dec-30-09 09:31 AM by robo50
Which is it? Italian or Nigerian? Actually, I'm sure this is just a mis-print in Sky News, but it's sort of funny how bad they are at proof-reading before publishing to the web.

Does Sky News know the difference?

I'm not blaming YOU, I just wonder why it's not clear by now exactly what happened before boarding this flight.

Red Flags should have been ALL OVER this guy, who paid for a one way ticket with cash.

7. Agreed, except that....
I agree except for one thing: In other parts of the world, paying cash is not a red flag. Westerners, especially Americans, think cash is odd and credit cards are the norm. It's not unusual for people elsewhere to pay for major purchases -- houses, cars, large appliances -- in cash, so an airline ticket paid for in cash is not so odd.

I suppose rules could be made banning the purchase of airline tickets with cash, but determined terrorists will just obtain (legally or otherwise) credit and debit cards.
