NH gays celebrate new law with Statehouse weddings
Source: Associated Press

Jubilant gay couples have rung in the New Year in New Hampshire with wedding vows to celebrate the state's new law legalizing same-sex marriage.

At midnight, New Hampshire joined Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut and Iowa in allowing gay marriage.

About 15 couples braved the cold to exchange vows outside the New Hampshire Statehouse in Concord. Others planned private ceremonies around the state.

1. History in the making
It's very, very cool that elderly gays and lesbians have lived long enough to see this.

4. I'm as opened minded as anyone,
but I couldn't help a little chuckle at the word "cruising". Adding "Mediterranean" to that is just icing.

6. New Hampshire has changed in the course of my lifetime to a
much more tolerant and liberal-minded state.

Oh it still has a share of loonies and religious bigots, but the majority of folks will accept this wonderful change with grace and understanding.

Best wishes to all the newlyweds, and to everyone who lives or visits New Hampshire these days.

11. Maine would have it too if not for the wealthy outsiders who engineered the defeat..
same ones who engineered Prop H8 in CA... what a surprise.

10. And, OMG, today frogs are falling from the skies here in New Hampshire!
Edited on Fri Jan-01-10 02:51 PM by Tesha
Well, not really, but there is a frog in our indoor fish pond!
Of course, we brought him in with the fish back in October.
But I'm sure there are others somewhere! Or maybe it's just
snow...

Congratulations to all the couples who married at the State
House this morning!

14. Gays rush to marry at New Hampshire statehouse
Source: Reuters

BOSTON (Reuters) - Gay and lesbian couples rushed to marry in New Hampshire on Friday when at the stroke of midnight it became the fifth U.S. state to allow same-sex marriage, reversing some setbacks for the polarizing national movement.

"I feel fabulous. It was wonderful, and it was historic," said Linda Murphy, 50, a college administrator from southern New Hampshire who married Donna Swartwout, her partner of 19 years.

They were among 150 people gathered in the state capital of Concord, in temperatures of about 21 degrees Fahrenheit (-6 Celsius), to witness the marriages of about a dozen gay or lesbian couples by a justice of the peace as the New Year dawned.

New Hampshire passed its law in June amid an emotional national debate. President Barack Obama opposes gay marriage while supporting other gay rights.

16. The momentum is growing. I think it will not only last,
but more states will be added each year until the number reaches some tipping point which forces the SCOTUS to rule that full faith and credit applies.

17. Seems likely
looking at the demographic trends (it's really only opposed strongly by the older generations) it seems that eventually it will be the law of the land.

18. seems like older people would support letting gays marry

Married people are more prone to being monogamous, and older people are always complaining about how the gays are so promiscuous and
everything.
