KABUL – A roadside bombing killed four U.S. service members, the first American combat deaths of the year in Afghanistan, while a British soldier died during a foot patrol elsewhere in the volatile south of the country, officials said Monday.

A statement from NATO's International Security Assistance Force said the explosion that killed the U.S. service members took place Sunday in the south, but did not give further details on the location or the victims' branch of service.

The deaths are the first U.S. fatalities from hostile action in Afghanistan this year. One U.S. service member has died of noncombat causes so far in 2010.

The British soldier died while on foot patrol Sunday in Helmand province, the British Ministry of Defense said.

9. If any damning phrase or saying in the English language
screams for a French translation, it's that one. Plus pretty much anything else about Vietnam. Bless ya for posting it.

21. I was talking about the Blue People....
Resources are resources to me. But its a lot different with people who are fighting with stone spears and arrows rather than AK's and RPG's.

23. I can see a similar disparity
in using AK's and RPG's against the most technologically advanced weapons systems on earth, backed by a virtually unlimited budget. I suppose there is really no way to quantify such a comparison, but the other poster's point seems valid to me.

As Einstein said, all is relative.

24. It's 'necessary' for those who have something to gain through it.
Presumably, the "war on terror" is for the 'security' of our country, but the return WE gain from deploying military forces halfway around the world, supported by trillions of dollars, is minuscule if it even exists. Studies show that terrorist attacks have increased dramatically since the declaration of the so called "war on terror". The 'terrorists' in Afghanistan are, by no stretch of the imagination, a threat to the ruling order of Western powers. Individually, we are FAR more likely to die of any number of accidents or illnesses, even if we are frequent fliers, than by a terrorist attack. I personally suspect that the policies that result in "wars on terror" are largely responsible for global terrorism to begin with. The CIA thinks so as well.

The "war on terror" is really about the corporate and political elites in the West, securing geo strategic advantage in Central Asia, by controlling the production and marketing of hydrocarbon reserves in the Caspian region. It's all part of The Great Game.

13. Horrific....but, this is the USA. We send young men and women
overseas to kill or be killed, and we can expect no different result. These are only the 1st deaths of the year. There will be many more.

Obama, like his predecessor, is determined to feed it.
