Yemen rules out US intervention
Source: al jazeera

Yemen's foreign minister has ruled out direct US military intervention to tackle the al-Qaeda group operating in his country.

Abu Baker al-Qirbi made his remarks to Al Jazeera on Monday as the US and British embassies in the capital, Sanaa, remained closed to public following threats by Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

"Yemen is going to deal with terrorism in its own way, out of its own interests and therefore I don't think it will counterfire," al-Qirbi said.

"The negative impact on Yemen is if there is direct intervention of the US and this is not the case."

1. heh... like they have a choice
if the MIC or Big Oil wants to go into Yemen, then they'll get "liberation" whether they like it or not.

13. The U.S. itself came out against direct intervention before this story broke.
Our forces are busy as it is, which is why the troop increase in Afghanistan has been staggered over time.

10. Well, there's no doubt that he's a war-monger and a corporatist...
...but I haven't heard anyone claim that he's worse than Bush. I think everyone can agree that he's better than Bush. How much better is a matter of contention, but worse??? Nah. I think you're getting too caught up in your own angst.

14. It has ruled it out, actually.
"The U.S. does not plan to open a new front in Yemen in the global fight against terrorism despite closing its embassy there in the face of Al Qaeda threats, President Obama's top counterterrorism adviser said Sunday.

"We're not talking about that at this point at all," White House aide John Brennan told Fox News when asked whether U.S. troops would be sent to Yemen."

17. I could cite those same statements...
...as evidence that we haven't ruled it out.

5. Can they do that?
I mean, there's a lot of things I'd like to just 'rule out', too...

15. The Obama Administration apparently sees no need for direct intervention at this time.
The Yemenis are tackling the issue themselves, and our troops are busy elsewhere.

7. The US consider national sovereignty inviolable -
Ours, that is. Yours? - not so much.

8. Yes Yemen is doing a great job "dealing with" terrorism in its own way.
Their system is working too.

11. I seriously doubt we will
You likely won't see an invasion of Yemen. There's no real reason for it, even in the most imaginative of minds. What will probably happen is increased CIA activity in and around Yemen (they've already been operating there for years now trying to get into AQ cells). Besides, a far worse event occurred there (USS Cole bombing) and we didn't invade...so why invade now? It makes no sense. For those of you bracing for an invasion, I think you're crying wolf. If we do invade I'll be glad to admit I'm wrong, but I doubt I'll have to do that...
