Octuplets mother's Beverly Hills fertility doctor accused of gross negligence by state

The Beverly Hills fertility doctor who helped Nadya Suleman give birth to 14 children, including octuplets, has been accused by the California Medical Board of repeated gross negligence.

Both Suleman and Dr. Michael Kamrava made international headlines last January, after the Southern California woman gave birth to only the second set of octuplets ever delivered in the United States.

Her babies, who will turn 1 on Jan. 28, are the longest-surviving set. Suleman is a single mother who was unemployed and living with her parents. All her children were conceived through in vitro fertilization. At the time, Suleman said she continued having babies because she couldn’t face destroying her frozen embryos.

They actually reviewed her medical records and had other peers review the actions to make sure that they were actually out of line.

If you read the full article, you'll also find that they're accusing him of doing something that was NOT widely reported in the media. He isn't being punished for impregnating her with octuplets, because that isn't a negligent medical decision (not from a strictly legal perspective anyway). He's being punished for failing to refer her to a mental health professional as required, and more importantly, for deliberately creating the situation that led to the octuplets. Apparently Octomom had a thing against destroying her embryo's and wanted to use them all. When the first rounds of implantation failed, the doctor extracted even more eggs and created even more embryo's even though there were still existing embryos from previous attempts, and even though he new that she would eventually want ALL of the embryos implanted in her. If he knew that she intended to use all of the embryos he created, he had a responsibility to use the existing embryos first to limit the potential number of pregnancies and protect her health. He failed to do that, and instead kept creating more embryos so he could charge her more money. He started a spiral that eventually led to all of the embryos being implanted at once, which led to her becoming Octomom.

11. These are not criminal charges. The CA Medical Board is taking action against his license

to practice medicine. The licensing board refers cases involving criminal activity to the appropriate jurisdiction, but the board itself is limited to license discipline.
