In Hasan (Fort Hood Shooting) case, superiors ignored their own worries
Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A Defense Department review of the shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Texas, fails to determine why the suspect advanced in rank in spite of worries over his competence.

Major Nidal Hasan is accused of murdering 13 people, the worst mass killing on a U.S. military base.

While doctors overseeing Hasan's medical training voiced concerns over his strident views on Islam, he continued to get positive performance evaluations.

The review, obtained by The Associated Press, found no one challenged his eligibility to hold a secret security clearance, even though his views raised doubt about his loyalty to the United States.

1. The military medical corps is stretched to the breaking point. They want to hold onto everyone. nt

3. We are also asked, rightly, not to judge.
I wonder to what degree there was an unwillingness to condemn the man on the basis of his words. A very difficult situation.

4. Not surprised

I can't say I am surprised for a number of reasons:

1. The desperate need for doctors in the military means they would over look those things, that at the time, seemed odd, but not overly important. (The military has never been able to recruit as many doctor's as they would like)

2. An unwillingness to do anything that might be considered discrimination, as an officer seen as being a racist or intolerant would likely see his career end.

3. It is easy to see in hindsight that they should have been very concerned, but it is unlikely that his fellow officers and his superiors had ALL of the pieces.

4. A general unwillingness (in and out of the military) by most people to make an accusation that could have a detrimental effect on someone's life.
