Uganda President Museveni wary of anti-gay bill
Source: BBC

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has distanced himself from a bill proposing execution for some gay people.

He stressed that the MP who proposed the bill, who is a member of the ruling party, did so as an individual and was not following government policy.

Mr Museveni, who admitted coming under international pressure, said the bill was now a "foreign policy issue" and would be discussed by the cabinet...

"The Prime Minister of Canada came to see me and what was he talking about? Gays," he said. ... "Prime Minister Gordon Brown came to see me and what was he talking about? Gays." "Mrs Clinton rang me. What was she talking about? Gays."

6. "The Family" US based Christian fundies stoked it
http://www.rhrealitycheck.org/blog/2010/01/12/why-ugandans-embrace-us-christian-rights-antigay-agenda

"There is a joke among Africans about how colonialism began. A Christian missionary came with a Bible in hand, told our ancestors to bow their heads for a prayer, and when they opened their eyes their land was gone. Today, the same can be said about African constitutions.

American religious right-wingers are flocking to Africa and are having more success in passing new legislation criminalizing homosexuality there than they are having in Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia.

The most vicious of those laws is in Uganda, where Parliament is now considering a bill that would make some homosexual acts punishable by death. Although they have denied it, evidence suggests that American right-wingers are in the forefront of this war on homosexuality.

Among them is the Fellowship Foundation, better known as the Family, a secretive but powerful evangelical club that includes U.S. senators and congressmen. Republican senators Jim Inhofe, Tom Coburn, John Ensign, Jim DeMint and Sam Brownback belong to the group. The group includes members like Mike McIntyre, a conservative Democratic congressman, who believes that the Ten Commandments are "the fundamental legal code for the laws of the United States." ........"

The Family and their christofascist corporate whores travel internationally to many countries spreading their bile, while accusing the gay community of being the one with the international agenda to take over the world. Go figure.

9. o/t, but did you hear NPR's story today about ritual child sacrifice in Uganda?
The reporter was looking in a cup and told by the witch doctor that it was a child's liver, and the reporter, clearly choked up, appeared to believe him. Then they interviewed a former witch doctor who admitted to sacrificing his own son and killing at least 70 other children. They said something about how at villagers bring at least three human sacrifices (blood, parts) to the spirit tree a week for the witch doctor to use in combatting "evil spirits."

Just wanted to add some context to the current debate about homosexual rights in Uganda. They're dealing with some seriously demented thinking among the villagers. I don't care what one says about respecting others' cultural practices. Slaughtering children makes me think these people are from the neolithic era.
