House Chairmen Say Health Care Deal Imminent ("this weekend")

Two of the House's most influential chairmen say that health care negotiations between the House, Senate, and President Obama have come so far, that they'll be ready to send a package to Congressional scorekeepers this weekend.

Congress Daily caught up with Rep. George Miller (D-CA)--chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee--and Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY)--chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee--who both acknowledged that a compromise could be just around the corner.

"We hope to be able to send in the next couple days our changes to CBO," Miller said (sub. req.).

...........

Congressional negotiators and the White House have made significant headway on resolving two http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/01/endgame-democrats-race-against-the-clock-to-pass-health-care-reform.php of the biggest differences between the House and Senate health care bills in recent days, and it looks like they're just about ready to wrap things up.

4. Whether we want it or not.
Just as long as President Obama has something to crow about in his State of the Union address. :eyes:

We'll see how loudly he's crowing when Americans finally find out and understand what's IN this bill that has been brokered behind closed doors.

Again, what happened to all of that "transparency" we were told we were going to have in government? All of this behind doors negotiating should have been on CSPAN for all to see.

5. This is the last good chance to sneak in a public option.
Drop the House public option in the engrossed bill, line up the Democrats in the Senate to operate in 24-hour shifts, and let the damned Republicans (and Joe Lieberman) filibuster until they can't physically show up to fight the bill anymore. Nine weeks of that, 24/7, ought to be enough to put them on their asses, and as an added bonus the Democratic committee staffs will be left unmolested to write up next fiscal year's appropriations bills, too.

Everything Harry Reid has been doing over the past three months has been maneuvering for this move. I'm pretty sure he wants to try it, but he's given up awfully easy up to now.

Let's hope that's the plan, because if it isn't, we're not getting anything close to what we want and need.
