Congress makes job creation top 2010 priority
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Members of the U.S. Congress begin 2010 scrambling to reduce the double-digit U.S. jobless rate, knowing their own jobs will be at stake in the November election if they fail to deliver.

With about one in 10 Americans out of work, the highest percentage in 25 years, President Barack Obama's fellow Democrats -- who control the Senate and House of Representatives -- are making job creation their top priority.

"Americans have a lot of angst, a lot of anger, a lot of fear," said House Democratic leader Steny Hoyer. "Whether you are a Democrat or a Republican or an independent, all polls show that jobs are the major issue."

Indeed, as the full Senate returns from the Christmas break on Wednesday, a week after the House, the jobs recovery will also be high on the White House agenda along with the massive relief effort for quake-stricken Haiti.

5. Jobs? What kind of jobs?
Minimum wage or Living Wage? Jobs doing what?
If they are not manufacturing jobs, but service jobs, it ain't a gonna work past the point when the stimulus money to jump start them runs out.

6. How about
working on bringing back a percentage of jobs that we have outsourced over the years? Two in particular are clothing and shoes. It would not be a stretch to insist that stores stock at least 20% of what is on the shelf with items made in the US as an example. These two indudtries in particular if resurrected in some small way would go a long way to getting those with the least education on the job rolls.

Congress doesn't know what a job is,to start with. Why don't they do the things already on their plate, like real health care reform, peace in our time, taxing the obscenely wealthy and shutting down corporate fraud and welfare and outsourcing?

13. I wish jobs had been a priority with the 1st jobless recovery that the bushes
past off as success. We haven't had any job creation in the past 10 years. Thanks Republicons for another mess.

24. It was written by several.
That thing had been on Bush I's desk.

And even though he had it on his party, Bill Clinton was no economic Democrat by any stretch of the word.

18. Then I hope some of them have been listening to Hartmann
1. Repeal NAFTA.
2. Restore tariffs to similar levels imposed by other nations.
3. Until the market corrects itself with the implementation of these two rules, create an FDR-style works program to get money into the pockets of those who need it most: The middle & working classes, NOT the banksters.

But if HCR is any indication, I'm not holding my breath for any substantive change to come about anytime soon.

26. Uh-oh.
Wasn't health care reform their priority in 2009?

(And it didn't get done. And it turned into health insurance reform instead.)
