(CBS) Poll: Most (71%) Don't Want Sarah Palin to Run for President
Source: CBS

A new CBS News poll finds that a large majority of Americans say they do not want former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to run for president.

Specifically, 71 percent say they do not want the former Republican vice presidential nominee to run for president, while 21 percent say they do want her to run.

When the results are split out by party, 56 percent of Republicans say they do not want her to seek the office and 30 percent do. Meanwhile, 88 percent of Democrats do not want her to run. Among independents, 65 percent do not want her to run and 25 percent do.

The poll also finds that more people view Palin negatively than positively and that her book tour did not improve overall views of her. However, she is a little better-known now than she was last fall, and both favorable and unfavorable ratings of her have increased slightly.

1. I'm a 21 percenter.
It would be a piece of cake for Obama and Sarah would provide so much material for comedians around the globe...

5. No, you're not
Those 21%ers are the same 21% who still identify themselves as Republicans and still think Gee Dubya was the greatest president since Lincoln (if not Reagan).

Come now, you're not part of that 21%, are you?

10. Not so sure about that
If they asked me, I'd say she should run. I think a lot of Democrats across the country would be very encouraged by such a move on her part.

16. Very good point.

How many of that 21% were going with the comedy option? They should have broken it down with an additional "Really? or because it would be funny?" question.

38. I think the question the really asked is Would you want her to be president.
I consider myself a democratic leaning independent. I would love to see Failin Palin run simply because it would grantee a democratic win. (And the tea baggers would be so mad when she lost.)

8. I agree
There's no doubt in my mind that I would love to see her run. Run does not mean win. By her running would deplete the republic party of almost all, if not all, their financial resources. It would expose them for the crooks, liars, and frauds they are.
Her running would make President Obama a sure bet. But--alas..There happens to be the American media that would do everything in their power to shove her into office. And never forget...There is a company known as Diebold. They happen to be the ones that determine our elections...So ....perhaps not.

14. 'Everything in their power to shove her into office'
That's just plain kooky. To speak of 'The American Media' as some sort of monolithic entity is problematic. It's a multiplicity of outlets, interests, individuals, and corporate entities, often with wildly divergent agendas and approaches to reporting. There's plenty of common interests among media outlets, particularly in finding and perpetuating stories that will grab eyeballs and increase revenue. The slow-moving train wreck that would be a Sarah Palin campaign would certainly be one of those stories. But to say the entire media would act in concert to make Palin president? That's simply delusional.

15. TPTB put W into office. It's possible they could do the same
with Sarah. She would be another sock puppet for the real power players. We do not need another empty head in that office to be controlled by sinister behind-the-scenes players.

6. In all seriousness......
Something that I find hilarious is that on the Palin facebook page 'from time to time' there are a few of Palin's fans that actually post there that say they want Palin to 'RUN' for SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE. The dimwits don't understand that that is not the way to become SOTH.
The intelligence level of the Palinites is shameful ;)

Btw, I doubt that Palin will run in the 2012 pres election, but it would be awesome to see her 'try' to debate President Obama :)

35. I doubt she will run too
Edited on Tue Jan-19-10 01:18 PM by blue_onyx
I don't think she has what it takes to make it through a primary. There are so many debates and so many issues. She only knows how to recite talking points. Being well-informed and thinking on her feet aren't her strengthens.

I think it is more likely for her to run as a third party candidate. If a third party asks her to be their nominee, she may yes. That way, she doesn't have to compete with candidates from her own party...she can just go out on the campaign trail and preach to the choir.

The best chance of Palin running is if the Republicans nominate someone who isn't popular with the base (like Romney).

I would consider voting for her in the primary if there was any chance the Idaho primary would help her get the nomination. I think that is close to impossible though.

9. Palin will not run. The pug candidate will be Scott Brown.
Palin is too polarizing to run as a general election candidate; her internal numbers have slowly but surely proved it to her. She has become a kingmaker instead, and appears to like that more and more as time passes.

27. Brown may or may not be the Pug candidate, but he is no less polarizing
and only a tick smarter.

He introduced a bill to prevent hospitals from giving rape victims emergency contraception. That's extreme right.

He ran first as being like Jack Kennedy, then as being 'independent." Whether that had a lower case i or a capital I was not apparent in his ads. Both were lies. None of his campaign material says "Repupblican." He will not get away with that if he runs for President. Nor will he have the luxury of running against a candidate like Coakley.

12. my own little survey . . .
I work part time at a nursing home as an activities assistant. We did Presidential trivia today and one of the questions at the end was "who was your favorite president and why?" I expected several answers of Reagan, George Bush, etc., given that the average age at the table was 80 but was suprised that not a single one named a Republican president. In fact, there were several in support of FDR, for his work in the Great Depression and a couple for Bill Clinton (one said he was her favorite because he was good looking!)but not a single one named a Republican (okay, there was one afterthought of Lincoln who was a Republican). I think this "conservative" generation is not as politcally conservative as people think. In many ways, their years of experience have led them to see clearer than many younger people. I think Sarah Palin appealed to the "younger" conservatives and may still have that appeal (the 21 percent) but it seems people who have some age and experience on their side, have seen that voting Republican has never been a positive thing for our country. (Again, with Lincoln being the exception.)

17. This isn't suprising...
Today's elders are the children of the generation that gave us FDR. Most of them have strong memories of the Great Depression and grew up hearing about the devastating Republican policies that produced it. As a group, they tend to rely on the corporate news media for information, and they have a greater tendency to trust clergymen than later generations. If it weren't for those two shortcomings they'd probably be even more supportive of progressive policies and candidates.

22. The thing about Lincoln, and TR for that matter, is that by today's
standards, they would be considered D's/Progressives.

Most people don't realize the R's and D's did a 180 on their philosophies in the early part of the 20th Century. Essentially they did a polar shift. and that opened the doors for Wilson and FDR. The disastrous policies of the R's dragged in the Great Depression, (Harding and Coolidge passed a ready to burst economic balloon on to Hoover and it went supercritical under Hoover).

Lincoln, being the first Republican to gain office under a fledgling party, set the road for them for the 19th Century. D's were incredibly horrid at the time, most being in the South and helped bring us to Civil War. Radical Republicans, (what would be considered "Teabaggers" today), were not much better...their policies destroyed the South after the war and created animosity still felt today in some quarters.

The individuals you work with still recall the horror of the Great Depression. I spoke to one elderly individual that told me that in Oklahoma City, he didn't even see a quarter for over 3 years, everything was done by barter and credit. People were starving and if not for the few that actually had something sharing, many would have died. FDR was a ray of hope, and people went for it. For the record, many of FDR's projects were flops, thing was, when they realized it was a flop, the Roosevelt Administration would shift gears and try something else...until something worked. Innovation was the name of the game, and as long as they kept trying, people were happy to keep him in the presidency. (He was also incredibly charismatic, I can listen to his speeches today and understand how he related to the people of the time).

If the current D's can take anything from recent R's, it should be their "screw you" attitude the R's had for the D's when they had power. They left D's out of everything...we should do the same. Put the R's into a "lockbox", just forget about any "bipartisanship" and move the country forward.

18. These types of polls are so useless...
As this thread demonstrates, many progressives actually WANT her to run because she's such a pathetic joke; she would do great harm to the ideology she espouses. Yet the media would spin their positive response as Palin support. Polls almost never ask "why".

19. she is the poetic justice of the propaganda hole the GOP has dug for themselves
By spending the last 30 years appealing nearly exclusively to the ''missing chromosome crowd'' as Lee Atwater called them, they have alienated swing voters, but if they run someone who appears to have an IQ greater than a dirty jock strap to appeal to swing voters, they will lose their knuckle-dragger base.

I can't figure out how they can dig out of that catch-22 (not that I want them to).

21. I'm not convinced Sarah wants to run anyway.
She was born for Fox, where she can make tons of money without any real responsibility or accountability. Basically, she can go on Fox, talk trash, lie through her teeth (which she's quite good at), and get very rich doing it. Why would she want the hassle of running for president? If she did, it would be good for the Democrats.

36. Listen Up! WE NEED PALIN TO RUN!! She needs to sweep the Repub Nomination...
No other candidate can split the Republican Party like Palin, and her negatives with Independents will continue to degrade the block of those who identify themselves as Republicans.

When Conservatives continue to 'purify' the Republican Party by kicking out those who are not 'conservative enough' they are ensuring future losses at the polls.

So let Palin continue to appeal to 'her base' --it will be the best thing that could happen to Democrats!

37. I'd like her to run as a third-party candidate
As a third-party candidate she'll split the conservative vote: she'll get ALL the teabagger vote and some of the non-teabag R total, leaving the rest of the non-teabag Rs to vote for Republican To Be Named Later. The division will ensure President Obama's reelection with little risk they could Diebold her into office.

The idea that Palin could bankrupt the GOP by running on their slate is intriguing, but the risk of her somehow pulling 270 electoral votes out of thin air is just too great to risk.
