US Army's war budget includes big weapons orders

WASHINGTON, Jan 20 (Reuters) - The U.S. Army's proposed $9.3 billion war budget for Afghanistan includes significant funding for new helicopters, ground vehicles, missiles and ammunition, and upgrades to existing equipment, according to a Dec. 23 draft budget document obtained by Reuters.

Following is a list of major items included in the Army request, which is part of the $33 billion the Obama administration is seeking for emergency war funding in fiscal 2011 to pay for a major buildup of U.S. troops in Afghanistan:

1. Remember when the dems tried to de-fund the wars?
Could we try that again?

I hear Bush is no longer in office so it might actually get signed this time. Then the wars wouldn't be a distraction to taking care of business here.

just sayin'

4. I wrote the White House about one of the line items
Specifically, the $1.07 billion ($160,419 per unit) to rebuild 6670 existing HMMWVs. A new one costs $140,000.

I suggested they order 6670 new ones, then sell the 6670 old ones they were going to fix to civilians on an "as is" basis. Charge $2500 per copy because you know whoever buys one is going to have to put ten thousand dollars into it right away, just to make it roadworthy. Total bill: $917 million instead of $1.07 billion.
