Edwards admits paternity
Source: CQ Politics

>>>>In a statement, John Edwards admitted paternity of a daughter with former mistress Rielle Hunter, despite his previous denials.

"I am Quinn's father. I will do everything in my power to provide her with the love and support she deserves. I have been able to spend time with her during the past year and trust that future efforts to show her the love and affection she deserves can be done privately and in peace."

"It was wrong for me ever to deny she was my daughter and hopefully one day, when she understands, she will forgive me. I have been providing financial support for Quinn and have reached an agreement with her mother to continue providing support in the future."

"To all those I have disappointed and hurt, these words will never be enough, but I am truly sorry.">>>>

18. Umm....
NO.

I am not a tabloid style media fan. The democratic party doesn't portray itself as the party of "Moral Values" therefore it shouldn't be dragged across the coals for offending others' "values"
Especially when repuke after repuke from the "Moral Values" party is given free pass after free pass: David Vitter, Mark Foley, Larry Craig, Mark Stanford, John Ensign, etc. etc. etc. . . http://www.republicansexoffenders.com is always handy to link for the "Moral Values" crowd

Anyone who truly cares, or tries to make it an issue I will point this out to them: A hypocritical scumbag who judges others is far worse than someone else who is just a scumbag.

If they keep it up, it pisses me off. I mean that in a "might incite physical violence" manner.

I was annoyed that he was running because he would have cost us the election, had he been the nominee. Beyond that, it's not my business. And that was quite a while ago. Time for me to put down the pitchfork and see to the beam in my own eye.

They dis anyone who exposes them or tries to hold them accountable.

Remember, lawyers are the ones in organizations like the ACLU and Amnesty International who are fighting for our human and civil rights.

84. Bush warns: Watch out for ’shysters’
http://rawstory.com/2010/01/bush-warns-watch-out-for-shysters/

President George W. Bush is warning Americans not to fall for scams trying to raise money off the disaster in Haiti.

"I need to put a pitch in for the clintonbushhaitifund.org," Bush told NBC's David Gregory. "One of my concerns around any crisis is that shysters show up and take advantage of people's good will and generosity. So for people who want to help, one avenue besides the established NGO's would be to tap on that website and we'll help make sure your money is spent in a transparent accountable way," he said.

Edwards Popularity Sinks Further
In the wake of new revelations about him in the book Game Change, a new Public Policy Polling survey finds that John
Edwards has seen his popularity in North Carolina plummet so that just 15% now have a favorable opinion of him.

Edwards is the most unpopular person ever found by the firm.

15. Maybe because there's a real live kid as part of this story?
If Barack Obama had decided to wait until 2012 or 2016 to toss his hat in the ring, I have no doubt that Edwards would have been the nominee in 2008.

Remember, his big issue was HCR, too. He would have set the cause back a century if he had managed to beat McCainiac.

21. Are you talking about Edwards' other children?
If so, perhaps you ought to mention Chelsea Clinton, too. I'm sure she privately suffered quite a bit of embarassment when this came out.

This is about totally denying a child that you brought into the world, and that makes Edwards sink to the lowest of the low.

Do we have to mention Chelsea any time we refer very indirectly to an affair now? For that matter, how about all the other children whose parent had an affair?

I am not putting one kid's pain above any other kid's pain. Then again, I'm not the one who had the affairs.

30. No, Edwards' campaign went south before the end of 2007. Too many people had
serious suspicions long before the primary season began. People all over the country quit their jobs to work for his Presidential run: you can be sure they lived and breathed that campaign every waking hour and sometimes in their dreams, and it would have been difficult to keep them indefinitely ignorant about potential problems with the campaign. And people like that really are motivated by some idealism. Once the staff knew about this sometime in 2007, there was no chance Edwards would be the nominee

92. What drove Edwards' campaign south
was the entry of Barack Obama. Edwards had Iowa pretty well organized, and still beat Hillary, he was the "anybody but a re-run of the Clintons" vote until Obama jumped in.

Besides, back then, the only "press" reporting this story was the freaking National Enquirer! The story wasn't covered in the mainstream press until after Obama showed that he was a viable "anybody but Hillary" candidate.

I don't seem to recall anyone on Edwards' staff backing up the Enquirer, in fact, they were still going along with the story about Andrew Young being the baby daddy. That's what happens to true believers, they believe any BS that the candidate tells them.

99. Nonsense. Obama announced (early Feb 07) about six weeks after Edwards (late Dec 06)
Edwards withdrew about a year later (late Jan 08) but everything I know points to serious and growing internal problems months before that

Your statement "I don't seem to recall anyone on Edwards' staff backing up the Enquirer" seems to me useless for analysis. For many and obvious reasons, campaign staff, confronted with claims the boss is boinking some babe, usually wouldn't rush to the tabloids with confirming evidence but would handle the situation in various other ways

102. There may have been internal problems
but even McCain had them before Iowa, and they didn't keep him from getting the nomination. As I recall, it took awhile for Obama's candidacy to be taken seriously, even African-Americans in the South were still polling as Hillary voters before Oprah gave him her blessing.

The Edwards story was treated purely as tabloid trash by the campaign, the candidate, and the mainstream press until it was crystal clear that Edwards wasn't going to get the nomination. Only then did the truth start leaking out. We dodged a major bullet there, it is clear that the man was incapable of using good judgment.

82. I doubt it.
If the choice were HRC or Edwards, it would have been Clinton.

It is very clear that an alternative to Hillary was wanted and Edwards was clearly rejected by the Democratic Senators. If Obama were unwilling to run, they would have converged behind someone else or simply realized that they were stuck with Hillary. For that matter, if the only viable alternative was Clinton, Kerry might have opted in - even knowing that the Clintons would be as bad to run against as Bush had been and the danger was that the attacks would be over so long a period that the party would be damaged. Kerry would not have had the advantage Obama had of being not considered a threat.

In addition, he likely would have lost to McCain, who against Edwards would likely not have needed a desperation VP choice.

because facts would have been pouring out of the woodwork. There would be a demand to have a paternity test.

In any case, everything that Edwards purportedly stood for would have suffered along with him. We're lucky that Obama eliminated him early.

27. He and his pretend wife stood on stages across America
While he detailed his 'traditional values' around marriage, and how such Southern Baptist values are 'just a part of me' and how because of being so devoted to protecting this Sacred God made bond, he simply could not support equal rights for others, because God told him those others were not up to his standards. Edwards is free to apologize for that slander and false witness any day of the week, as is his wife, who served as a will prop in selling that particular lie against millions of Americans.

It's a complicated and not terribly admirable personal arrangement they have. I never voted for him, but I do admire him bringing up issues of poverty while a candidate; that mattered. She's still a kick ass truth teller, even if her personal life is a mess of, and her bravery and spirit in the face of cancer is still a powerful example.

I won't spit on them when they're down.

28. *sigh* I worked hard for his first Senate campaign and devoted time to one of his Presidential
campaigns. He seemed to be a great candidate when I first met him. A lot of other people felt the same way: former Senator Terry Sanford handed him his mailing list, I think. And back then, he and his wife interacted very nicely

This wouldn't be the first wrong call I've made, and I'm sure it won't be the last. But I think he changed: Small town boy hit the big time and forgot where he'd come from and who had helped him get where he was

53. No surprise to me after all that's happened
I think we'd all pretty much figured out that he was the biological father.

But I'd like to see this situation be a WAKE UP call to the people within the party who vet the candidates to do a more thorough job of finding appropriate candidates. Someone (like Edwards) with this much tabloid-trash-potential should never have made it to a national campaign. Someone else should have spoken up BEFORE it went that far.

There are some wonderful politicians out there, but in my view, there are ENOUGH that we don't need to select candidates who are going to sink the campaign with their personal skeletons. I do realize that a person's private life should remain private, but when a candidate enters a campaign, he/she knows there are going to be people raking through their trash cans, etc.

65. Disappointing on an epic scale, but the Edwardses weren't all bad.
Despite mammoth moral flaws on his part and a willful blindness on hers, they did some good in the world. I never voted for him, but they both went out in public and said things no one else dared to say--truths about our country that we needed to hear.

Since it seems that he didn't actually harm the Democratic party, I'm willing to wish them so long and farewell without any bitterness. Maybe this whole mess will make my 2016 dream ticket of Elliot Spitzer-Jesse Jackson a reality!

62. I'm glad he finally said it
That little girl deserved to be acknowledged. It's not her fault her parents are screwed up.

I feel sorry for Elizabeth. There was a radio interview here, don't remember if it was national or not. The reporter asked her about the baby and, I'm paraphrasing, she said that it was too hard for her. If she can't perhaps the other children can in time embrace the girl. It would be good for them, I think.

I was always lukewarm to him. I did work for him for Senate the first time, way back when, but that was because it was part of the Democratic slate. I didn't work for him specifically.

It really pains me that we have candidates that show such promise and then they implode like this. To a certain degree I don't care about personal lives. Plenty of people who are very talented at their jobs, including political ones, also have spectacular character flaws. Can you have one without the other? I honestly don't know.

86. Yea, there were clues...
I was among a small group in Iowa (maybe 20 people) who met with him at a cafe. Turns out there were a few loud-mouth right-wingers in the group who dominated the start of the question/answer period. We kept quiet just to see what he'd do. It took Edwards about 10 seconds to size the situation up, make the erroneous assumption that these morons were representative of the group, and morph into a conservative. It was revolting.

75. Now that he and Elizabeth have been outed as the nasty, foul-mouthed shams that they are ...
http://nymag.com/news/politics/63045/

... nothing left to do but finally MAN UP and take responsibility for your CHILD. Jesus. What a nest of skanks (Rielle included).

I'm terribly sorry Elizbeth has to battle cancer on top of having a silly and skanky husband. But she and her husband could have cost our party the presidency with their selfishness.

Now, I only feel sympathy for ALL of their children.

"Who cares" is right (about the adults).

And, yes ... it's none of our biz-ness. And yes, most Dems don't play the "family values" card ... but, in this case, the Edwardses presented a completely fake "lovely family" tableau ... "we go to Wendy's for our anniversary date nights, giggle giggle" (while John was bonin' a groupie and Elizabeth was belittling her husband in public while wading through money to bitch about how no one on the campaign staff would get health insurance till she and John got theirs). Ugh. Go away, alla-yunz.

We never had to deal with the Clintons pretending to be the Holy Family; we knew Bill was a scamp when we voted for him, and that he and Hillary had a complex relationship.

Hey, I was a big supporter. I gave him some money.

But lordy, what a moron. The story never ends. Babba Wawwa said that Andrew Young is going be on 20/20 in a couple weeks to rehash it more. You don't have someone COVER for you unless you are beyond certain the will not betray.

Also this means she was ready to give birth right after IOWA. (kid was born 2/2/08) What a moron. What arrogance.

Never enough sorry-yeah you think?

Also let's give kudos where due-the National Enquirer. I just read this week's issue-(I know you are dying to know) that Michelle Obama despises OPRAH now, and is banning her from the White House. WHY? Because Oprah now supports Hillary over Barrack. If Hillary runs again, she is supporting her. I guess also the diss was that Oprah expected more access to the prez and flirted with him. I find this laughable.

and would want a better source that Michelle despises her and banned her.

The NE did a good job holding onto a story no one in the MSM wanted to print. I can understand the reluctance to print it with no proof, but I do remember the Salon.com article was convincing enough they should have further investigated. That said, there overall track record is less good.

I don't think it means a thing.

As far as giving the National Enquirer props, I'm thinkin' someone sicced the Enquirer on the story. Maybe Hillary's camp. Maybe someone in the Edwards camp. Supposedly, some of his own peeps were prepared to stop him if he got near the nomination and nobody did better research on Hillary's opponents than Hillary's camp.

100. Ech.
The first impression I got of Edwards was that he was a fraud, just something about his body language and demeanor the first time I saw him speak to a crowd. He just seemed full of himself. But I knew enough people who liked him for what seemed like valid reasons so I thought I'd try to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Now that I recall my first impression of him, I'm not surprised to find he turned out to be a lying narcissist.

How lovely to hear he's "doing the right thing" by wanting to be a part of the life of the daughter he fathered while betraying his wife and family.

I hope the little girl lives a happy life but sweet Jesus, her father's a fucking idiot.
