Haiti rescuers race to rescue 'trapped survivor' (update he's rescued!)

Rescuers are trying to reach a Haitian man believed to be still alive under a ruined building, on the day the search for quake survivors was declared over.

A French official told reporters it could take two hours to free the man from the rubble.

Some reports suggest the man has said five others are also alive under the ruins of a hotel and supermarket in the capital, Port-au-Prince.

Earlier, Haiti's government said search-and-rescue operations had ended.

UN spokeswoman Elizabeth Byrs in Geneva said the decision was "heartbreaking" but that it had been taken on the advice of experts.

UPDATE:
A Haitian man has been pulled alive from the rubble of a ruined hotel after 11 days, as the official search for quake survivors was declared over.

The 24-year-old man was carried out on a stretcher from the rubble of the hotel in the capital, Port-au-Prince.

Haitians and rescuers cheered as the man, seen to be smiling, was taken towards a waiting ambulance, the BBC's Adam Mynott reported from the scene.

Earlier, Haiti's government said search-and-rescue operations had ended.

1. He may be able to survive if he's had access to fluids and food in the supermarket.
That is good news.

2. They just got him out!
On his way to a French hospital. One rescuer says he's in pretty good condition and may have had access to some water while trapped. (per CNN)

5. the only way they could possibly survive is if they had access to food/water
the body's organs start shutting down after three to four days.

7. I keep wondering about those 60 people at the Carib. Market

Supposed to have all been in a big aisle? Maybe those that could get around had gathered together and ate what they could find. They'd mention them now and then last week, and one NBC segment showed a water truck backing up and a hose being inserted down through a hole to get water to them, but I never saw or read anything after that.

I wondered if maybe they could get them water but any other access was deemed impossible. what a nightmare. people dying around you, hoping for death yourself at times, at other times hopeful for rescue...I would seriously lose my mind.

and all those children at the orphanages, and on and on...and all those people that we don't even know about, it is haunting me.
