United Airlines Flight 223 was diverted to Denver International Airport this afternoon after a passenger attempted to open an exterior door in mid-air.

Just after 5 p.m., the plane landed safely at DIA. The plane had been traveling from Washington Dulles International Airport to Las Vegas, according to DIA spokesman Jeff Green.

"It's virtually impossible to open an exterior door while in flight," Green said.

The disturbance began around 4:45 p.m., Charlie Hobart, United spokesman said.

12. The best was the Third Rock from the Sun episode, in which Shatner's character and John Lithgow's
character discovered they had both had similar horrible flight experiences.

4. What in the hell is wrong with people lately? I spent quite a few years flying all the
time, and there was NEVER and disturbances on any flight I was ever on! The worst thing I can recall was hitting a few air pockets and dropping s few thousand feet. That was a rarity though. Why are there so many angry people????

7. Where are the air marshalls.
I not suggesting that we need to continue creating a police
state but there was a promise to make the skies safer with
more cops.

17. Most flights do NOT have air marshalls on board.
Too many flights, not enough marshalls.

9. Another almost-disaster on an airliner...I'm getting paranoid.
Just less than a month ago was the failed bombing attempt on the Detroit airplane. And then there have been incidents at the Newark, NJ airport where a guy who snuck into a restricted terminal area and in the same airport a plane landed sans right landing gear.

10. please tell me everyone here would grab a guy or two and say, 'let's hold down the person who's lost
their mind".

I'm guessing he just 'lost' it. But, I wonder if people actually jump up and pull these people to the ground from behind when they do this stuff?

19. JUst a few weeks before 9/11. a passenger on a flight out West
(I think going into Salt Lake City) was acting strangely and was subdued by several other passengers. The man was actually smothered, and it turned out he had a mental illness.

Sorry for the vague reference, but I don't have time for research right now. I felt sorry for the man and for the other passengers at the time, that's why I remember it at all. I think 9/11 would never had happened if it hadn't been for the standing rule to follow the hijackers' demands.
