McCain says will vote against Bernanke

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican Senator John McCain said on Monday he will vote against the nomination of Ben Bernanke to serve another term as chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve.

In a statement, McCain said he appreciated Bernanke's service but "I believe that he must be held accountable for many of the decisions that contributed to our financial meltdown."

"Therefore, I plan to oppose Chairman Ben Bernanke's confirmation for a new term as Federal Reserve chairman," he said.

McCain, who is up for re-election this year in his home state of Arizona, had been leaning against Bernanke, who is facing a tight Senate vote on his confirmation but seems likely to be approved.

said he didn't know much about economics when asked what he would do about the collapsing economy. OK, let's say he knows some other stuff. And in all fairness, it was the beginning of the recession. But he has established himself as unqualified to hold an opinion.

I recall that McCain said at the time that there was was nothing wrong with the economy of the US. During the fallout from that statement I remember wondering what all the fuss was about because I had interpreted what he had to say as there was 'basically' nothing wrong with the economy implying that it would recover as it has many times in the past. That's what I would have meant if somebody had asked me to make a statement at the time, and if he would have clarified what he said he would have avoided a lot of the negative reaction. Somehow,and I'm certainly no fan of McCain's, I still think that's he meant. Unless of course he's dumber than I think and that's not much of a stretch.

One side tells me Bernanke saved us from disaster, the other side tells us he contributed to the meltdown. McCain's calendar of events seems a bit off. If anything, most of the blame the Fed should take for the meltdown comes from Greenspan.
