McCain says will vote against Bernanke
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican Senator John McCain said on Monday he will vote against the nomination of Ben Bernanke to serve another term as chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve.

In a statement, McCain said he appreciated Bernanke's service but "I believe that he must be held accountable for many of the decisions that contributed to our financial meltdown."

"Therefore, I plan to oppose Chairman Ben Bernanke's confirmation for a new term as Federal Reserve chairman," he said.

McCain, who is up for re-election this year in his home state of Arizona, had been leaning against Bernanke, who is facing a tight Senate vote on his confirmation but seems likely to be approved.

1. And McCain would likely vote FOR Bernanke if Obama didn't want him re-elected.

5. If McCain had won the election
He'd have re-nominated Bernanke.

But he's up for re-election this year, with a very ugly primary and terrible poll numbers, and if he was ever good at anything it was knowing which way the wind was blowing.

8. In the primary, his numbers are pretty good
He's about 20 points ahead - after last week, we know how numbers can change, but that's not terrible - http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/01/poll-mccain-way-ahead-of-hayworth-in-gop-primary.php

(this may be the mirror image of some RW posts in 2008, that Kerry would lose either the general election or primary)

9. Interesting
Last numbers I saw for him were in the "incumbent in trouble" range. I wonder why his numbers rose?

20. I have the feeling too that if Obama were a Senator instead of president, he'd also be voting agains

t Bernanke.

It's interesting how one's position seems to affect one's decisions.

27. Bernanke and Paulson should both be facing criminal investigation
for what apparently would constitute a conspiracy by the fed and treasury to mislead BAC shareholders about the material adverse issue at merrill.

11. During his candidacy McCain
said he didn't know much about economics when asked what he would do about the collapsing economy. OK, let's say he knows some other stuff. And in all fairness, it was the beginning of the recession. But he has established himself as unqualified to hold an opinion.

32. I may be wrong but
I recall that McCain said at the time that there was was nothing wrong with the economy of the US. During the fallout from that statement I remember wondering what all the fuss was about because I had interpreted what he had to say as there was 'basically' nothing wrong with the economy implying that it would recover as it has many times in the past. That's what I would have meant if somebody had asked me to make a statement at the time, and if he would have clarified what he said he would have avoided a lot of the negative reaction. Somehow, and I'm certainly no fan of McCain's, I still think that's he meant. Unless of course he's dumber than I think and that's not much of a stretch.

McCain is more liberal than Obama, and better at dealing with a financial crisis.

15. huh?
One side tells me Bernanke saved us from disaster, the other side tells us he contributed to the meltdown. McCain's calendar of events seems a bit off. If anything, most of the blame the Fed should take for the meltdown comes from Greenspan.

24. I hope that running against JD Hayworth breaks him
Neither of these bozos have any respect for our president. Let them slug it out and hope that the biggest teabagger, birther bigot comes out on top. I put my money on the Democrat running against the winner. Arizona is broke and needs all the Federal money it can muster and I can't imagine either McShame or "hay" Worthless promising to go after one dime that they can't stuff directly in their pockets.

If Obama wants it then McCain and the right do not. Just sucks when the wrong guys are right. Rarely happens but can occasionally.
