Hackers Hit House Websites
Edited on Thu Jan-28-10 05:14 AM by Lasher
Source: National Journal Magazine blog, 'Hotline on Call'

Hackers struck at least 10 House websites overnight, substituting expletives aimed at Pres. Obama just hours after his State of the Union address.

The hackers targeted many House Dem freshmen, including Reps. Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM), Harry Teague (D-NM), John Boccieri (D-OH) and Steve Driehaus (D-OH), as well as at least 5 other more senior Dems and the site owned by GOPers on the House Oversight Committee.

"F--- OBAMA!! Red Eye CREW !!!!! O RESTO E HACKER!!! by HADES; m4V3RiCk; T4ph0d4 -- FROM BRASIL," the messages read.

The Red Eye Crew has been responsible for other hacks before. The group claimed credit for hacking a site belonging to Old Dominion Univ. in '08 and Wieden + Kennedy, a New York ad agency.

This is ongoing and the MSM has not yet picked up on it.

The official website of Congressman John Campbell (R-CA48) has also been hacked. Earlier Campbell was the subject of a digital prank as a misspelled link on his campaign website actually directed visitors to the site of Democratic challenger Beth Krom. That anomaly was corrected on January 26th.

19. You want the NSA monitoring our congressmen directly?
There might be some push-back on that.

This should, however, have been picked up at the borders. Of course, since this is defacement, not anything dangerous, it's likely that if it was noticed, nobody really cared.

Regardless, they just might live to regret this. Those were official congressional websites they hacked. They might think it's funny but I assure you the feds don't.

Edit: I see Politico has picked up on this.

Hackers infiltrate House Web sites

Hackers appear to have infiltrated the Web sites of more than 20 House members overnight, replacing their usual pages with attacks on President Barack Obama.

The home page for the Republicans on the House Oversight Committee this morning reads: "F—- OBAMA!! Red Eye CREW !!!!! O RESTO E HACKER !!! by HADES; m4V3RiCk; T4ph0d4 — FROM BRASIL."

Similar messages appear on the home pages of Reps. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.), Peter Welch (D-Vt.), Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.), Phil Roe (R-Tenn.), Charlie Wilson (D-Ohio), John Tierney (D-Mass.), Charles Gonzales (D-Texas), Brian Baird (D-Wash.), John Barrow (D-Ga.), Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), John Boccieri (D-Ohio), John Olver (D-Mass.), Bobby Bright (D-Ohio), Mike Coffman (R-Colo.), Travis Childers (D-Miss.), Andre Carson (D-Ind.), John Campbell (R-Calif.), Suzanne Kosmas (R-Fla.), Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) and other members.

The apparent attacks, first reported by Hotline's Erin McPike, come days after four men were arrested for attempting to tamper with the phone lines in Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu's New Orleans office.

15. Probably not.
The vast majority of these types of defacements are traced back to bored kiddies armed with nothing more than metasploit, nessus, or one of the other scanner packages.

10. I almost got a scoop on this.
Edited on Thu Jan-28-10 10:12 AM by Lasher
I was doing some research on the SCOTUS and by chance ended up at Congressman John Campbell's official website, where I saw what the potty mouth hackers had done. I had a pretty decent writeup ready to go in LBN but it took me a long time because the cat kept wanting to bite the mouse cord. Gotta get me onea them wireless meece.

Right before I thit the trigger I decided to check to see if anybody else had picked up on it and that's when I saw the Hotline article that I shared in the OP. Oh well, so much for my Jimmy Olsen moment.

12. To be honest the Hotline article I linked in the OP did a better job than I would have done.
Anything I had to add to their story at the time I offered in my remarks.

What we have here...

By Joe Kimball | Published Thu, Jan 28 2010 10:35 am

U.S. Rep. Betty McCollum was one of 43 House members who had their Web sites hacked last night.
The Uptake reports that the sites were vandalized with profanity and anti-Obama messages, signed "Red Eye CREW" and included the words "FROM BRASIL."
Minnesota Independent noted that McCollum's site was still down this morning, and it remained so at 10:25 a.m., with the note that it is currently undergoing site maintenance.

14. These guys are most likely international and working out of internet cafes,
making them next to impossible to catch. I wouldn't take it too personally anyways, these people are probably just kids trying to get a kick who could care less about real American politics.
