US soldier dies in Iraq; death not combat related

BAGHDAD – The U.S. military says an American soldier has died in southern Iraq of injuries unrelated to combat.

A military statement says the soldier from United States Division-South died on Thursday. The name of the soldier is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Friday's statement also says the incident is under investigation. It provided no further details.

The death raises to at least 4,375 the number of U.S. military personnel who have died in Iraq since the war began in March 2003. That's according to an Associated Press count.
