Despite testy exchanges, GOPs applaud Obama for meeting
By Molly K. Hooper - 01/29/10 06:13 PM ET

BALTIMORE -- House Republican leaders largely praised President Barack Obama after they engaged in a testy 90-minute exchange with the commander-in-chief on Friday.

Like a boxer after a slugfest, GOP officials expressed respect for the president for being straightforward with them.

But it's unclear whether the meeting, or Obama's pledge to hold monthly meetings with the minority, will overcome deep partisan divides that have left both sides mistrustful of the other's intentions.

House GOP lawmakers left their meeting with Obama torn between hopeless frustration and renewed pride on Friday.

3. I agree
it was good for democracy and this should def happen more but the repubs are regretting both the invite and the video cameras. Itd be really nice if we could do more of a house of commons thing. Barry can hold his own with them.

7. Whoever controls the media controls the world.
If teabaggers have not figured out that they are being used by the GOP by now, they never will. Teabaggers are nothing but a fascist regime whose strings are pulled by the likes of Fox New Corpation’s owners. They will never hate the GOP unless FNC tells them to. Teabaggers are violent, stupid, armed, and eager to point their guns wherever FNC tells them to.

9. Very Good
I think it was a very good thing to do. I was pleased to see that respect in this meeting seemed to be a "two way street."

10. It has me surprised. And should have their leadership frightened.
If the elected Republicans feel differently than the leadership commands...they might stop following orders.

11. There are Republicans who are loyal to the people in their districts
Rather than to their centrist controlled inner circle.

Same as in the Democratic party.

12. They got what they wanted
They recognized from the outset that nearly no one would pay attention to the details of what was said- but that the resultant media coverage would help them rehabilitate their image from the dour party of no into the party of alternative ideas.

What's more, those "ideas" were elevated to a level of prominence with the President himself- and by engaging in the "dialogue," they now look as though they're trying to be productive, contributing something from their side of the aisle.

That their contributions lack any substance or merit and won't solve any problems, is quite beside the point- they've now been legitimized.

That was the reason they invited Obama to this dog and pony show in the first place.
