Toyota fixing 1.3 million vehicles for engine oil leak
Source: Gulf News

Toyota said on Tuesday it is voluntarily fixing 1.3 million vehicles in North America for engine oil leaks but denied the campaign is a recall because it did not affect safety.

"It is what we call a service campaign," said Toyota spokeswoman Mieko Iwasaki in Tokyo.

Toyota has been carrying out repairs for the past five months, Iwasaki said. The Toyota spokeswoman said the company had already repaired the oil leak problem free-of-charge in 342,200 Avalon, Camry and RAV4 models and 374,000 Lexus ES 350 and RX 350 vehicles in the United States...

1. Damn!
Given Toyota's record of late in being slow to recognize and fix problems, why would anyone want to buy one? I sure wouldn't. It seems there's a new revelation every day!

4. Thanks for Posting
certainly another black eye for the vaunted quality image.

I have a Yaris now (for the commute to work) , but I doubt that I would buy anything Toyota given the recent series of issues in the press.

5. I still don't understand
how come your problems over there, especially the likes of this, dwarf our problems here in Europe. Where are your ones made ?

6. You really want to step into the quagmire of EU consumer complaints...?
My dear, brave dipsy... http://ec.europa.eu/consumers/ecc/index_en.htm

Models vary widely from region to region. For some reason this is especially pronounced with Toyota.

11. I'd forgotten
you're not in the USA. The question was directed as though you were as I honestly don't know where all of the US models are made other than the fact it sure ain't Europe. I think you know I'm english and in the UK. All of our UK RHD cars are either maunfactured here or in Japan where they drive on the left too - no exceptions of which I'm aware. There are 4 other countries in Europe with Toyota factories inc the Russian one - not sure where the other three are but I think one of those is joint vebture with another manufacturer. I have a feeling that most of the engines for Europe are manufactured here in the UK at a single factory. The Toyota models are standard throughout Europe other than maybe one or two 4WDS which are not sold here.

I couldn't figure out how to use your link with regard to Toyota complaints in Europe but yes - EU complaint process is universal.

9. Raises all kinds of questions... have they secretly been replacing this during normal service?
Did they cover it up until now?

10. Here is a report indicating they saved millions doing just that

Document shows Toyota sought to limit, avoid recalls, rules

Toyota Motor Corp. officials took credit for saving hundreds of millions of dollars by persuading federal regulators to limit or avoid safety recalls and rules, a company document released late Sunday shows.

The document, an internal company presentation, depicts an automaker focused on getting what it termed "favorable recall outcomes" from regulators, with a goal of saving money even as the death toll climbed from accidents in which Toyota vehicles accelerated uncontrollably.

The presentation by executives in the company's Washington, D.C., office was addressed to Yoshimi Inaba, Toyota's top U.S. executive, and dated July 6, 2009 -- months before the sudden acceleration problem was widely known outside of Toyota and the federal highway regulatory agency.

The document, released by congressional investigators, describes the automaker's regulatory agenda and highlights a wide-ranging string of "wins for Toyota."

Yet the faithful still believe they are driving the best quality car on the road.

I like Chevy's current add, "May the Best Car Win"
