Senate committee to review Toyota recalls

WASHINGTON — Toyota Motor Corp. faces more questions from Congress over its troubled safety record when top company officials testify Tuesday at a Senate hearing on the automaker's huge worldwide recall of 8.5 million vehicles.

The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation will hold the third congressional hearing in seven days on whether Toyota and federal safety regulators acted swiftly enough to deal with cases of sudden unintended acceleration of the Japanese automaker's cars and trucks. Three Toyota executives and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood are among the witnesses expected Tuesday.

Toyota President Akio Toyoda pledged last week before the House Oversight Committee to be more responsive to driver complaints and safety warnings from the government. Toyoda made a similar promise to improve quality control while apologizing Monday to Chinese Toyota owners.

But the company still faces lingering doubts over the cause of the problems, which it has blamed on gas pedals that can get obstructed by floor mats or stick due to design flaws. Safety experts have said the electronic systems of Toyota vehicles could be to blame. Toyota insists there is no evidence of an electrical cause.

1. And that denial is what's going to cost them dearly
I doubt the toyota branded vehicles are long to be. Like Datsun of years ago, so will TOYota go.

3. Not quite the same
Datsun was chosen as a brand name to distance the parent factory Nissan’s association by Americans with Japanese WWII military manufacture. Then it was changed to the parent company name.

Toyota is derived from the family name and I'd say they won't chnage it.

4. datsun was distancing themselves from the name
Edited on Tue Mar-02-10 09:27 AM by madokie
partly because of the quality of the vehicles they were perceived to be building by many of us back then also. And that is why I said what I said. Toyota is not long to be as a major brand and I suspect they will have a name chance in the not too distance future (family name or not, they want to sell vehicles.) I guess I disagree with you :hi:

Oh edit: Don't the Japanese do a hari kari thingy sometimes in cases like this or is that only the Chinese?

6. I think you may have it back to front
It was Nissan distancing themselves from their own name.....lol. I bet those that have still got early Z.s still call them Datsuns though out pride.

"Hari kari" is Japanese. Chinese have something similar - Jo Betty Lou kari .......Hari's redneck sister. :)

:hi:
