Gov. Bill Ritter injured in bicycle crash

10:52 a.m. CST, March 2, 2010

DENVER - Gov. Bill Ritter is at Denver Health Medical Center being treated for broken ribs he received in a bicycle crash Tuesday morning in Denver, according to his staff.

A statement from his office says he is being treated for several injuries, and that it appears he has multiple rib fractures on his right side. The crash happened shortly before 6 a.m. at 23rd Ave. and High St. He went to the hospital in an ambulance.

There was no vehicle involved in the accident.

Staff members say the governor is an avid bicyclist and regularly rides his bike in the morning on various routes in Denver. He was with a group of four other riders Tuesday morning when he and another rider collided.

The other cyclist had a minor injury and did not need to go to the hospital.

2. I'm surprised that he was treated down at DHMC
The accident happened only two blocks from two major hospitals.

6. He would have been closer to St. Joseph's but DHMC is Level 1 Trauma
(as is St. Anthony's) so that probably was the reason for Denver Health--which isn't all that much further.

7. Yes, for sure about DHMC being the best for trauma
But the accident practically happened on the doorstep of Pres St L's.

Btw, I heard about it on David Sirota's show this morning. It was a really good program today. :hi:

5. I wish I had a dollar for every rib broken ...
by a bicyclist, just in my family alone! Add the punctured lungs and I'd be rich.

I hope Governor Ritter recuperates quickly. I know for sure he'll be back on that bike again as soon as he does.
