Reid's Office: Bunning Holding All Obama Nominees
Source: TPM

March 2, 2010, 6:07PM
Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY), who has become a one-man filibuster of a bill to extend unemployment benefits, apparently placed a hold on all presidential nominees last week.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's office confirms to TPMDC that Bunning has placed the holds.

"It turns out that not only has he been blocking the unemployment insurance bill, he has also been blocking the confirmation of nominees since last week as well," said Reid spokesman Jim Manley.

1. not confirmed: deal on allowing unemployment benefits to resume also includes
Bunning agreeing to lift his hold on nominees.

Again ... not confirmed.

34. Is he a drunk? I didn't know that much about him before this week.
That would make sense to me.

I hadn't heard that, but then again, I didn't know a thing about this thuglican before last week, other than the baseball stuff.

5. WTF kind of representative democracy is this?
I'm having a hard time fathoming how one person can be allowed to pull this kind of fuckery in a 'free' country. Hell, Hitler did it, but he was a murdering dictator.

10. I thought Richard Shelby (R-Northrop Grumman) already had a hold
on most of the nominees. Has he passed the baton to Bunning now?

18. yup.
Edited on Tue Mar-02-10 09:41 PM by onenote
last week reid said bunning could have a separate vote on his amendment to fund the extenders package and bunning said no, he wanted it included in the unanimous consent package because he knew he'd lose if it was a separate amendment. Reid stood firm and eventually Bunning caved and ended up with a vote on a separate amendment that lost and then the bill was considered and passed.

If Bunning had taken the deal offered last week the result would be exactly the same but the repubs wouldn't be left with egg on their faces. Yes, people lost benefits for a few days which is unfortunate, but its worked out quite well in the long run.

Now please explain how you see it.

27. holds often are anonymous
the hold is placed by a member through the majority or minority leader. So if Democrat put a hold on a bill, Reid would know who did it, but McConnell might not. Same thing when a repub puts a hold on a bill. McConnell knows who it is, but all he tells Reid is that there is a hold, not who it is.

29. and how would that have changed this situation?
This wasn't a filibuster. This was an attempt to move a bill under a procedure called unanimous consent that cuts through the regular order and gets a bill to a vote quickly.

31. The 'hold' courtesy rule should be eliminated... it there solely to obstruct
an up or down vote period.

28. Breaking: some DUers can't accept fact that Reid played this perfectly
The repubs are exposed to the nation for their obstructionism. The delay in benefits/disruption of construction projects is long enough to get folk's attention, but not so long as to cause permanent harm or to have the situation turn around into "why haven't the Democrats simply moved ahead with a cloture approach?" Bunning ends up caving, basically accepting a deal quite similar to what he rejected on Thursday.

So what would you have done differently?

30. You've missed the point.
Ahem.

I have zero disagreement with you regarding Repubs exposed, Bunning defeated, blah blah blah etc.

Reid has a long, long, long, long track record of backpedaling, caving-in, capitulating, recapitulating, and offering tearful apologies. Reid is weak sauce at best and a train wreck at worst.

The comment was a satirical comment on Reid's historic behavior pattern. Google "Harry Reid Apologizes" and in addition to the 40+ pages on Reid's apology to Obama, you'll find multiple apologies to the GOP where ZERO apologies were needed.

There was no actual accusation in my original post about any Democratic strategy regarding Bunning -- despite your effort to see one.

Some DUers have a deficiency of irony. And woe to the DUers who are iron-clad DLCers and Reid-apologists. Reid shows more energy & determination fighting his own party than in fighting the opposition.
