Triple Suicide Attack Kills Dozens in Iraq
Source: CBS News/AP

Coordinated Blasts in Volatile Diyala Province Part of Expected Wave of Violence Ahead of Weekend Election

A string of three deadly suicide bombings killed 30 people in the former insurgent stronghold of Baqouba on Wednesday, including a blast from a suicide bomber who rode in an ambulance with the wounded before blowing himself up at a hospital, police said.

The bombings — Iraq's deadliest in weeks — come as Iraq is preparing for March 7 parliamentary elections. The crucial balloting will decide who will oversee the country as U.S. forces go home and help determine whether Iraq can overcome the deep sectarian tensions that have divided the nation since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

U.S. and Iraqi officials have warned repeatedly that insurgents were expected to launch such attacks in an attempt to disrupt the crucial vote. A man purporting to be Abu Omar al-Baghdadi — the leader of an al Qaeda front group in Iraq — has vowed to violently disrupt the vote.

The bombings could also affect the candidacy of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who came to power in 2006 and oversaw a return to relative stability in 2008 and 2009. Al-Maliki has continued to bill himself as the best candidate to assure security in Iraq.

3. It certainly is encouraging
to know that the tyrant Saddam is gone, that the Iraqis have democracy, that direct American involvement is winding down, that the oil is pumping and that Iraqi population control is still making progress. What fortunate people.

4. That is a total waste, and undermined the will of the American people
Edited on Wed Mar-03-10 12:34 PM by avaistheone1
Our mission was to secure Iraq's supposed Weapons of Mass Destruction.

NOT to take out Saddam.

NOT to establish democracy in Iraq or nation-build there.

NOT for oil to pump there.

With over 100,000 Iraqis dead, the war in Iraq has caused one of the most severe refugee crises in history, 50,000 Iraqis fleeing their country each month (and untold numbers of others being displaced internally). Consider all the Iraqi children born with depleted uranium birth defects because of our bombs. These are NOT very fortunate people.

Furthermore there are thousands of American soldiers dead, billions of dollars (which will soon be trillions of dollars) absolutely wasted for nothing in Iraq. In addition we have not pulled down our presence in Iraq, we have replaced some US military with military contractors like Blackwater/Xe. This is not what the American people had in mind when we voted for Obama to get us out of Iraq.

:grr:

Thank you for the RW talking points though.

6. Before becoming so pessemistic
you should also consider what a wonder job we've done in turning a mere authoritarian dictatorship into a fake client democracy and a failed nation state at war with us and itself. Brilliant!
