'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' repeal moves closer

Five senators to introduce bill aimed at repealing 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy barring gays serving in the US military

The end of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" military code – barring gays and lesbians from serving openly in the US armed forces – is in sight, as five senators will launch legislation on Wednesday designed to scrap the policy.

Senator Joe Lieberman and four others, including New York's Kirsten Gillibrand, will announce the legislation, the Military Readiness Enhancement Act of 2010, which contains provisions to repeal the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" law and prohibit discrimination against soldiers on the basis of their sexual orientation, as well as promoting the establishment of Reserve Officer Training Corps units at elite universities.

That last category is the result of some universities – including Harvard university – banning the officer training corp from their campuses, a legacy of the Vietnam war protests of the 1960s and 1970s. More recently the existence of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" has been a barrier to universities lifting their bans after protests from students and staff.

1. My only concern with the repeal
is the safety of the GLBTs that serve in the military.

2. Senator (Lieberman) introduces bill to repeal 'don't ask, don't tell' policy
Source: CNN

Washington (CNN) – U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman introduced a bill Wednesday that would officially repeal the military's controversial "don't ask, don't tell" policy regarding gay and lesbian service members.

A separate repeal bill was previously introduced in the House of Representatives.

"To exclude one group of Americans from serving in the armed forces is contrary to our fundamental principles as outlined in the Declaration of Independence," Lieberman recently said in a written statement.

It "weakens our defenses by denying our military the service of a large group of Americans who can help our cause."

The legislative push comes in the midst of a Pentagon review on how to successfully implement a repeal of the policy, which was enacted under President Bill Clinton in 1993. Top Defense Department officials will testify before the House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday to discuss the review.

10. Probably because
if he used an executive order it would be overturned 5 minutes after a puke gets the Presidency.

23. Executive orders cannot override statute law.
This has to be passed by Congress.

13. Lieberman is an insult to the Troops and Veterans alike
A draft dodging warmonger does not have the stature to introduce the DADT bill. Joe is slime. Kerry or another veteran should be introducing this bill.

....make that, once a day....but every redemption begins with the first step....follow through joe, keep steady and fast on that hard road to redemption....

....and maybe after 5 or 10 years of hard productive work, you might be able to run for public office again and win....

No chance. Stick a fork in him. He's done.

26. Exactly.
Even people I know who had been staunch supporters - for years and years - think he's slime now.

Unless he attempts to run as a Republican (and they very well might not buy that a second time), he's toast.
